Food Plots buckwheat

Fast growing & good soil builder, often referred to as "green manure". Will be mature in 60 days and then you can disc back in and seeds will provide a second crop.

Have used it several times in past when establishing new plots in poor soil. Minimal use by deer in my experience. They did seem to just browse thru on our place. Probably just too many choices

I would plant it this time of year for deer. Mix in some iron clay cow peas and you have a fine mixture for deer.

Is there a certain variety of buckwheat you suggest and if so where is the best place to purchase?

Planted some buckwheat this past Friday for the first time. I'm curious to see how it does. Mainly using it for a cover crop till fall and help build the soil. Hopefully the deer will use it also.

Thanks Jack. So you wouldnt plant it to attract deer?

Not at our place, just too many other food choices this time of year.

Justin had a good idea though with planting peas with it. Hopefully the buckwheat would act as a cover crop to give the peas a chance to grow.

Thoughts and opinions on buckwheat

I used to use it extensively in my early planted fall plots. It grows fast and deer like it, but it will die with the first freeze. However, it often makes it through bow season, and is an excellent attractant for that period. However, because it is a large-seeded plant, it does not germinate well being broadcast onto unturned ground. Being broadcast onto turned bare soil, and being cultipacked, will produce a very nice stand.

BSK is right good for bow season, if the deer let it last that long

I'm a big fan of turnip/radish type plants in fall/winter plots. They add late-season variety.
