I'm a duck hunting addict that loves to deer hunt but always aim to fill my freezer before duck season begins as I can't stay out of the blind once duck season begins. So I typically take the first two or three does I see and then hunt for horns until Thanksgiving week-end. Over the course of "many" years, I've shot some nice bucks but never ones that would overwhelm you. Look good on the wall but that's about it I suppose, all special in their own way to me.
If you duck hunt, you know the birds ain't here yet. Was supposed to spend the week-end duck hunting with some buddies but they decided not to come in town due to lack of ducks. That changed my week-end plans. Spent Saturday looking at mostly skys void of ducks except the group of 4 mallards that circled forever before making that final fateful descent. Other than that nothing. Decided rather than getting up at 3:30 to drive 2 hours for that I'd go deer hunting near the house.
Woke up the next day, bone tired and actually got partially dressed before undressing and getting back into bed. Getting old and worn out and decided rest would be good but after hitting the sheets, was reminded "You can't kill 'em in bed". So I drug my sorry tired self out and drove to the farm.
After getting on stand, the wind switched directions on me several times until it started coming out of the west which blew me into the area I expect to see my deer come from. Light and variable, the bane of deer hunting was cursing me again. As I argued with myself about whether to leave and go back to bed, I heard a deer blow from behind me which happened to be west of me. I knew the deer wasn't blowing because of me and I've really only seen does blow so I stood up in my stand and began scanning the woods behind me. It wasn't but a few minutes and I heard a deer running through the woods in my general direction. Great a doe and I'm betting she's got a buck on her behind. Sure enough trailing her by about 30 yards and running parallel was the big boy. All I could think of was, I gotta get him stopped before he hits the field or he's home free. I bleat at him with my mouth twice and he never hesitates. I bleat/yell at the top of my lungs and he comes to a halt looking in my direction. The old Marlin 35 spoke and he ran about 30 yards and crumpled. Time from sighting to trigger pull was about 5-10 seconds tops. I was shaking so bad after he went down! Best deer ever by far. Now I've got to convince the wife to take the family photo down over the mantle as the man cave is full

That is one wide dude! I've only had one deer run after being hit with my Marlin .35 336 and I've killed dozens. Congrats!

My dad passed when I was 14 and it was his. Shot my first deer with it as did my daughter and now the young kid I take from time to time. I love mine as well.

About as wide as they come, what a trophy! You might have to move more of the family pictures for that guy, good problem to have. Congrats!
