I coyote hunt a bit, but am not any type of expert on it.
What I do is find the most open area that I can that has cover attached to it, and a 'finger' of that cover extending out into the open area. Also make sure it has yote sign on it! I use a remote Johnny Stewart caller and put on the distressed rabbit call, and occasionally mix in some distressed pup sounds. I also have a turkey feather tied to an arrow that flutters about in any breeze stuck in the ground right by the caller. I put my caller 40-50 yds from where I set up, and I try to get my back into some bushes, and ALWAYS setup facing into the wind when looking at the remote caller.
I first start with the volume pretty low, and run the call for a minute or so, and then shut it off and wait for 5-10 minutes. Then I'll turn it back on for another minute or so at a medium volume, and shut it off for a few more minutes and just watch.
I'll stay at a setup for about 25-30 minutes max before finding another place to setup.
I haven't tried 'misting' the scent mixture technique yet, but a guy I sometimes hunt with is swearing by it.
My method works about as much as it doesn't. There's times that I'm sure that a coyote is checking things out, but he's left before I spotted him.
I think yote hunting is about as much fun as deer hunting.
