Looking to buy a good slug gun this year, because most places I have to hunt don't allow rifles. I really like the Benelli Super Eagle II, but way out of my price range. Any opinions for the best slug gun under $750.

Thanks, Ruger
I will check the price on the Browning Gold. I heard that shotgun mentioned also in an article on slug guns.

The H&R Ultra slug hunters are the best value for the money. The accuracy is scarey good. I have 2 of them (1 mine, 1 my sons). I won't even put a slug barrel on my 870, just no need.

Yeah, I have to agree about the Browning. I have a Browning Gold in 20 gauge and it is awesome. I also have a Remington 11-87 20 gauge and it is great also.

I would go with one of the true slug guns that have a 'rifle' trigger instead of the 'slap' trigger that most shotguns will have.

I shoot a 1187 and H&R slugster. Both shoot great and both will knock the snot out of you.If i were buying another slugger it would be Remingtons new Super Sugger.870 with heavy pinned barrel. No movement here.Thumbhole stock, not sure if thats good or bad.Weaver style bases.I would hope it has a rifle trigger but i bet it doesnt.Whatever you get,get a trigger job.
Good luck.

Just wandering what kind of shell shoots good in yours
i have a 20 gauge ush and just put a Leupold ultimate slam on it need to take it to the range

I tried many types, and found that the Hasting laser accurate shot best for me. I was so impressed that I reload my own now. Thier web site is:

http://www.slugsrus.com/store/index.html

The best price I found was thru www.grafs.com

Grafs carges the same shipping weather you buy 1 box, or 1 semi full.

These slugs were developed using the H&R as the test weapon. I spoke to the design engineer once. He knew at what point in the barrel it went supersonic. I have had unbelievable accuracy with them, and they are now nearly as expensive as alot of the sabot rounds out there. Just my opinion.

After a lot of reading and some good info from renegade50
(thanks again) I am getting the Laminated 20ga Ultra Slug Hunter. I am going to try then Hastings Laser Accurate Sabot Slugs, Rem. Copper Solid Sabot Slugs and some Rem. BuckHammer Sabot Slugs. I should have the gun in about 5 days then I will be at the range afew days after that.

For a few dollars more a box ($18) try the Remington CORE LOKT ULTRA. Shot decent groups with Copper Solids for years with my 870 and 1187 then tried the Core-Lokts. Bottom line; my comfort zone went from 100 to 150 yards with a steady rest. (hardly ever need to take a shot like that with my Remington 1187 but always nice to know I can.) I have since changed my battle sight zero back to 100 yards with tighter groups shooting off hand.

If you are super serious about your slug gun accuracy, before you go buy expensive ammo, spend the money on trigger work. The diff is day and night, and, depending on the weapon, a pin job will will increase your shot group consistency as well.

Please let me know. I just bought the same gun and would like to know the outcome.

I bought the same gun, sent it to HR for a trigger job and shot some Hastings Lasers, Lightfields and Buckhammers. All shot cloverleafs at 50 yds and 2-3" at 100 yds. I went with the Buckhammers since I found them locally.
and the buckhammers are so much cheaper!!! I am hoping the gun is in tomorrow. They are saying it is on its way. I ordered it 7 days ago so it better be in soon.

Did you ever get a gun?

I just pick up my H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 20 ga laminated($280.00). I was shocked how heavy it is. I pretty much only stand hunt so it won't be much of a problem. Nikon scope is mounted and ended up with about 1/8" of hammer to scope clearance. I need to clean it good and go to the range!!!

The reason the gun weight as much, it is 12 ga barrel bored to 20 gauge, its like a bull barrel on a rifle. I have good luck with lightfields

Oh, I know why it is so heavy. It also has a weight in the stock. I guess I should have said "I didn't realize how heavy 9 1/2 pounds is". Plus I think it's compact size fools your brain into thinking it's going to be lite. It is a good shooting gun.

Mossberg Model 695 bolt action 12 gauge slug
Ported barrel
Flat, matte black
Composite stock

DEADLY accurate!

Ithaca Deer Slayer. 12 gauge pump one of the best around. Based on the very durable model 37 it comes with a rifled barrel and you can buy a regular shotgun barrel for it. Or if you already have a model 37 there is a slug barrel on Gun Broker.

I have an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter in 20 gauge and I've tried every 20 gauge slug made. The most accurate in my gun is the Remington 2 3/4" Copper Solid.

Ditto on the Remmy 2 3/4" solid coppers, they were the only ones that grouped consistantly in my 12 ga.

i use a T/C Pro Hunter

How is the Pro Hunter slug? I'm thinking about buying the barrel for Illinois this year.

The slug barrel is sweeeeeet! It's really accurate and with a hornady sst slug it will put them illinois deer down! I absolutly love mine, actually pulled it out sunday and dropped a yote at 150yds chasing my chickens.

20 gauge USH Deluxe here. Take the butt pad off the stock and remove the heavy steel weight in it to lighten the gun. To me it becomes a more balanced gun after doing so - and MUCH lighter. Mine shoots several different slugs pretty well - but the BEST is the Lightfield Hybred EXP. The faster rounds approaching 1900 fps don't shoot nearly as well as rounds that shoot around 1500 fps.
