This is my first year to use a trail camera and I have decided to use a Trophy Rock to hopefully get some pics. At this time of year is it best to set the mineral up in the woods or field edge? Also, has anybody had to wait a long time to get deer hitting the Trophy Rock?

Normally with stuff like this it would be way more beneficial to get it out in the spring and keep it fresh. Thats when bucks are craving nutrients for antler development and will be drawn to it more !! The key to stuff like that is find a good spot and keep it fresh year after year and dont get discouraged if you have no activity the first couple months other than tracks and droppings!! Most of the holes you see that deer dig getting to that stuff has taken at least a couple of years to make or they have a very dense population and the deer herd have found it quickly. Most negative comments are people that dump one rock or bag of minerals a week before season and hunt it without success!!

On an old stump, near normal deer traffic is the best place,IMO,but as stated above, best time is to get em hooked in early spring. But they hit mine every month of the year, different in different spots.

Put it on a stump by a good travel corridor like an old logging road or major trail. You will probably get a little action on it this year but then you will notice them starting to hit it good in April next year. For this year, if you can tell where they are entering the field, put it there and they should stay long enough to get some good pics.

Along a major travel route and near a concentrated food source.

I have all mine along the major entrance/exit trails to food plots, generally within 50 yards of the plot.

What he said. I usually try to find a good trail leading into the field and put it near it.

I set mine up with a camera nearby...will check and see if any pics were taken. As mentioned above I have had a few people tell me it is a little late but will see.

It's not too late for them to hit the salt by any means....BUT them finding it by the time they disperse into their fall patterns would be my only issue

Either at a trail intersection/ location where deer travel a lot, or next to a food plot. I have most of mine near food plots for two reasons. One b/c deer use the plots they found the TR fairly quick and two, does especially, use these all summer and into the fall, so the TR combined with a new fresh growth creates a very good place to kill some does. The bucks obviously use them two but once they shed their velvet they typically become nocturnal until the rut. By the way, I would pour out a 50 pound bag of corn when you put your rock out. Shouldn't need to put out more corn after that but deer will find corn quickly and then will find and start to use the TR.

By the way, in regards to putting the minerals out in late spring in lieu of just starting now, it's frustrating that my local co-op hasn't figured out that TR's aren't deer attractants for hunting season as much as they provide nutrition during the spring and summer. After 3 years of selling them, they still don't get them in until the first of August. Annoying...
