bedding Rem. 700 XCR stock

I've got a Remington 700 XCR in .300 RUM and considering a bed job for the XCR stock. I removed the stock and noticed how plastic it is. Never been fired before and looking to make it as good as possible without replacing the stock with a higher end replacement. Has anyone bedded an Remington XCR stock with good success? About to use Brownell's Acraglas Gel as the bedding compound.

No experience with that stock but I've used the Acraglass gel with good results. Just be sure you get the release agent in every little spot and use tape if you have to keep it out of trigger, etc. Just bedded my Tikka T3 action just in the front around the action screw and lug and the rear tang. Seemed to help.

I have never tried it but I have read up on these guys. Looks interesting. They have a stabilizer kit and a bedding kit. I always end up buying another stock.

Use regular JB Weld and bed it around the recoil lug, pretty much just filling in the cavities from the front of the magazine to the cavity in front of the recoil lug recess. Take a Dremel and scuff/dimple the schit out of those areas and make a thru hole between all the cavities that you're going to fill (creates a mechanical lock between the JB and the stock). The front cavity is pretty big so you may want to dam it up about halfway but filling it solid won't hurt anything. After you bed around the recoil lug, take some sand paper and a few different sizes of deep well 3/8 drive sockets and open up the barrel channel so the barrel is free floated.


It takes quite a bit of JB to fill these stocks up so getting the industrial size tubes helps. Mix it in medium sized batches and pour it in (Dixie cup works well). Once its poured in, hit it with a heat gun or hair dryer to float the air pockets out and help it flow between the pockets through the holes you put in it. And keep in mind that anywhere you don't scuff good the JB (or any bedding compound) won't stick good, as you can see in the stock below. I didn't scuff around the action screw good and it flaked off.


I've bedded several of those stocks and it usually helps them between bedding and floating. And it'll be good practice for when you bed your next stock :grin:

Rubber...what do you use for your release agent?

I use KIWI shoe polish, neutral in color for the release agent and it works great.

I'll second everything rubberduck said. I bedded a synthetic savage stock that will be redone simply because I didn't scuff enough and some of the jb weld pulled out when I pulled them loose. Kiwi shoe polish as said above works great.

Kiwi shoe polish. I put masking tape down around the areas I don't want the squeeze out to get on and clean up as much as possible while it's still wet. I try to let the JB set up for at least 24 hrs if at all possible. If you break the action out of the stock before the JB has fully cured it's nearly impossible to get the action back in the stock without having to do a little Dremel work. It shrinks right up to the point it's fully hardened.
