We went from 2 to 4 because arguments that #3 deserved a shot. We went from 4 to 12 because arguments #5 deserved a shot. When evaluating any "injustice" from arguments that #13 deserved a shot, it would probably be prudent to remember why we expanded to 12 teams, which is to not include teams that claim they deserved a shot at the playoff, but to include teams that deserved a shot at the title. In that regard, I think the 12 team playoff has achieved that purpose. There aren't any teams left out that deserve a shot at the title because they've gone deep enough to include teams that have no business being there.
Yes. An 8-team playoff would ensure the "right teams" (maybe up to 5 or 6 teams) are in the playoff except the automatic qualifiers has pushed the need up to 12.

The mission is to select the best teams. A lot of folks talk in terms of teams that "deserve" to be in it which can be different than "best" which is where I think a lot of disagreements gets started with fans. And the ultimate issue is there is not a perfect way to determine and rank the best teams.
MISSION
The committee's task will be to select the best teams, rank the teams for inclusion in the playoff and then assign the teams to the playoff bracket and their game sites.

Notice the subtle jab at " bottom feeders" playing OSU. Orange and white/ Black and Gold clad bottom feeders whipped that inbred red team last I checked . 🙄
A third team did too!

I agree. Looking at the top 12 this year you have a strong argument for 6 or 7 teams that have no business even sniffing at the playoffs. Some bottom feeder manages to get lucky and bust a bracket early and knock out a potential key team like Texas or OSU that has a legitimate run at it or they manage to injure a key player (s) on that team potentially hurting their chances at survival in the remaining brackets.

I do think the cream rises to the top but as we saw with the michigan V OSU game there is the potential for a upset.

We were fine with the top 4 spots and the invite system. This 12 team garbage is exactly that . Garbage.

If a bottom feeder beats you than they are better than you that day. That's why they play the game. LANK.
If Alabama would have been good enough to be one of the 12 you wouldn't be whining and you know it. You cannot just say congratulations to the 12 and talk about how the tide will be back next year? Goodness. Y'all got beat by Vandy AND got soonered by Ok!

lol. Every fan of every team that DIDNT WIN a conference is complaining about the auto bids!! Win your conference! I think the auto bids are the greatest thing to happen to college sports in years! I bet the conference champions will get great recruits because of this and make the games even better!!!

I'd rather watch 12 teams play in meaningful game than 4, and then bowls
Good point. I was more interested in the various conference championship games because of the play-in nature of the games. I'll probably watch playoff games that I wouldn't pay much attention to if they were regular bowl games with the identical matchup.

Potential major ripple effects regardless of where you stand
Basketball has a much better grip on rankings that take into account strength of schedule with the NET and its quadrant system. Of course, there are many more intra-conference games and total games in basketball; more data points typically lead to better accuracy.

I think the initial college football rankings come out too early which causes the committee to start painting itself into various corners right off the bat. At least they wait until November but there is still too much going on in November. TV and other media love it though.

If, as it seems everyone agrees, the 4-8 best teams are in the playoffs why is there any complaining or discussion? We have the best teams, and if they are the best teams then they will win.

There really shouldn't be any whining over the bubble teams.

There is still complaining over seed positions and home field assignments. I'd like to see consistency from year to year with a good basis of metrics. The committee next year will consist of different members than this year's and no one knows what direction they will take in the evaluation of teams. I see it as there is room for improvement.

Don't watch. Don't comment. WDGAF.

No doubt it makes you not want to schedule good teams going forward. Am I glad bama didn't get in? Absolutely but I also think they'd smoke Clemson and SMU. As I've said in other posts no matter how they do it somebody is gonna be pissed off they don't make the cut. If you took the top 25 then 26 is gonna make their case for why they should've been in.

Have y'all noticed commentators going outta their way to try to convince the viewers that the regular season is still as important as it was before this so call "playoff"? Same with the conference championship games. They know they are lying and are fed those lines from ESPN corporate to throw in multiple times per game.
Bottom line is this playoff thing sucks and is killing college football. The BSC was as close as it got to being the right way to have a champion other than the polls.
Myself, I think the poll system was best cause everybody hardly ever agreed on the outcome, it created endless talk and kept college football front and center all year long.

The committee did fine with the rules they had to follow.

As a football fan not just a Tennessee fan this expanded playoff is great, more meaningful games is awesome. The regular season still matters. Ask bama, SC, and Ole miss if the regular season matters. Tennessee is in the playoffs still kicking themselves over a regular season game.

Watching SMU taking on Penn state is awesome to me. I think the best 7-8 teams in the country are in these playoffs and have a chance to win it, that's must watch great football which is cool to me.

Depends on which Alabama team shows up! That was their major issue this year. Consistency!! That's why they're not in the playoffs! They didn't show up against two teams they should have manhandled!

I don't understand what you're saying?
You think regular season games aren't important? Ask Alabama?
You think they should just take a poll and put a crown on a team people vote for? Crazy talk. They would have crowned Texas SEC champs and they got beat again by Georgia
I think the playoffs have saved college football. The portal combined will make for some great games in the future. Like I said cupcake dynasty's are over.

Yes sir. And to think if a sleepy Georgia or Texas shows up that these teams don't have a chance is crazy talk. Ask Vandy, OK or Alabama!

Here are additional comments that Saban had during the same conversation that was mentioned in the article linked a few posts back but the article left them out:

"I do think that the best teams are in the playoff, which I think is most important. And no coach should have any complaint about what his circumstances are relative to getting into the playoffs or out of the playoffs because they all controlled their own destiny.

"They all had opportunities and they had some flaws and bad losses that contributed to their circumstance. So, this could be a learning lesson for each and every team and every individual on those teams."

I don't mind the playoffs. I just don't like the auto bids. I'm not mad Alabama got left out of the playoffs. If they didn't get embarrassed by Oklahoma then they'd be in.
If you're only looking for the best 6-8 teams then why have a 12 team playoff? I don't think winning the championship of a weak conference should get you in the playoffs. That's just silly. IMHO

What do you mean cupcake dynasty's?
I mean at some point if they keep letting "weaker" championship teams play all conferences will get better you will not get many those cupcake games. For instance Saban was saying why play ND, Ohio and those other hard out of conference games. Well they will all get harder the more the conferences and the teams even out. I believe the auto bids will accomplish this. If you could get an auto bid playing SMU for conference champ or an auto bid playing Al, Ga, Tx which conference are you going to play in? Alabama dominated because all the 5stars wanted to play for Alabama. Or that's the way I see it. They had the top recruiting in the country year over year. Compared to other weaker teams.

I Think the top 9 schools got it this year, but I understand your point. I like the idea of awarding championship teams. I mean the big 10, and SEC champ will be a top 5 school Auto bid or not. I think they should take away the auto bye, that alone will help. If you finish 17th in the ACC and win a conference chip they should be a 12 seed if the big 12 champ finished 15th they should be the 11th seed, And so on.

They should get a Auto bid, not a guarantee bye. More times than not 3 of the 5 the champions would have finished in the top 12 anyhow. FSU would have been a top 5 seed for the ACC just last year, So if your team finishes in the top 10 to avoid being knocked out by a MAC school or a undeserving ACC or BIG 12 team you have a great shot at getting in which is pretty fair IMO. What's not fair IMO is a 11-2 SEC champ loser falling back to 5 and giving the BYE to a team like Boise state.

Unless. Boise beats said SEC champ.
