Armadillos

Anyone seen more than usual this year? Pretty much all season they've been out in daylight a lot more than normal. No it's not the population going up, the amount of sign on the ground is the same as ever, and I've always heard lots of them after dark. But this fall they are out during the daytime like crazy.

Thought it was the warmer weather but I had one come out 20 yards from me yesterday when it was freezing cold.

Today I was stillhunting thru a creek bottom and saw 8 total. 2 of em were in an intense chase with one trying to hump the other. Lol

If they're still out like this after deer season, I'm gonna have to pack the tube full of bullets on the Marlin Model 60.

They are around. I live off of Mosley Ferry and my dogs killed one and left it laying in the back yard. They are around just out more at night I think.

Been over run with them for the past couple of years. After killing literally hundreds of them I have finally put a hurting on the population I believe.

When we hunted Williamsport Wma they were everywhere up there. I have been seeing several on my place. Once deer season is over I'm going to war with them!

I have never seen one here in East TN.

In 1999 I could say that about where I live. I was heading West across the TN river and seen one dead in the road. First one I'd seen in TN. All my other sightings had been in Texas.

This year I found these weird trails through the woods, looked like a giant mole was tunneling under the leaf and ground matter. I couldn't figure out what they were until sitting in the stand one evening I head what sounded like someone dragging a stick through the leaves. Looking down I saw an armadillo pass almost under the base of the tree leaving one of those distinctive trails while rooting through the leaves like a hog.

Catman, if you were to post a video of two armadillos humping that should earn some kind of award!! :lol:

it was too thick to get the camera on and they were moving around too much. But the male would try to get on the female and she would jump and do a backflip and run away. It was great

I'm surprised you only found those trails this year, I've seen them several years all over the place, and knew they were armadillos, and always heard them at night and it's not hard to walk up to one and shine it with the flashlight. They need to legalize night hunting for armadillo cause it would be the most effective way to kill off a bunch of them.

I grew up with them in S. AL and we would declare war on them outside of regular hunting seasons. Not that smart but tough. Had more than one take off with an arrow in it's shell. Supposedly made a dent in our turkey population. then one year they just disappeared. Not a single one for several years.

Found them on my place in Lincoln, Co. about 5 or 6 years ago. First sign was a big yellow jacket nest dug out of the ground. Was happy about that. Then some big fire ant nests were raided. Again, happy about that. But now they are ripping my yard apart and I'm afraid of them raiding turkey nests. Will have to break out the M-rod very soon...

I'd seen these trails before but it never clicked as to what I was looking at. Believe it or not in the last five years I've only seen one armadillo on this property but for some reason that changed this year. Now those little suckers are all over the place. Until it turned cold I had taken to carrying a take down .22 with me in an attempt to harvest one. Myself and another guy cook a lot of wild game for work, right now we have our coworkers convinced that we're going to cook one and serve it as a Mexican dish.

Always heard they ate fire ants. As a kid I don't ever remember seeing fire ants here. Ran into them often at my grandparents place in Texas. I know there's fire ants around now. Wonder if it's a connection?

Hmm I thought it was skunks that would dig up yellowjackets. But I can see how an armadillo would be the perfect critter to do it as well.

A friend of mine knows of 200+ being killed by his friends.............he alone has taken right at 30. Yes , we have a real problem. kill em all.

I have killed over 100 just in the past couple of months. I bet I've killed over 1,000 in the past 5 or 6 years. I think they are the reason our turkey population hasn't bounced back. I'm in Lawrence county by the way.

I'm rough on coons and possums too as well as skunks, and yes I see several armadillos during the day. I killed 17 the other evening before dark.
