Are any of you planning on hunting LBL this season ? I work in LBL and thought I would give some advice and answer some questions that seem to come up each season. Hopefully this can help to answer some simple and basic questions some of you may have about LBL.

How big is LBL and what is the terrain like ? LBL is 170,000 acres of land that is about 90 % covered by forest and ridges.

Are there big Bucks in LBL ? Yes, but they are often scattered out over a large amount of land so patterning them can take time and patience.

How is the Deer population in LBL ? The LBL Deer population is down from what it used to be, mostly as a result of maturing forest and a increased coyote population. However there are still decent deer numbers in certain areas. It's important to remember LBL is mostly a large forested ecosystem. Typically large forested ecosystems simply do not support high deer densities. In some areas it is common to hunt 2 days straight and never see a deer, however in other places you may see deer daily.

What hunting areas are best ? The truth is every single hunting area/unit in LBL is mostly forest and ridges. So every hunting area/unit basically offers the same type of habitat and terrain to hunt. Some areas do however have more crops than other areas which can be seen on maps of LBL.

Which is better the KY side or the TN side of LBL ? Both sides have good areas and bad areas for deer hunting. The KY side generally receives more hunting pressure especially from Non Resident hunters. The TN side has more undeveloped land, and larger tracts of land in between roads. Both sides are capable of producing large Bucks.

Are there wild hogs in LBL ? Yes, back several years ago most were found in the northern end of LBL in area 1. However, in recent years there have been numerous wild hog sightings in the Tennessee portion of LBL.

Are there venomous Snakes in LBL ?
Yes. There are Pigmy Rattlesnakes, Timber Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, and Cottonmouths present in LBL. Timber Rattlesnakes, and Copperheads have been confirmed in every single hunting area/unit. Pigmy Rattlensakes, and Cottonmouths are much more rare in LBL.

Also something else to consider, the Ticks, Chiggers, and Mosquitoes have been much worse than normal in LBL this summer. This is likely a result of all the rain we have had here this Spring/ Summer. So if your hunting during the early part of season make sure to bring proper bug spray.

LBL is my favorite hunting Trip, we have had very very good luck there. I don't think as a duo ( Me and my Dad) we have took a trip to LBL and not at least seen deer in the woods while hunting.

We have killed many also, including a Nice 11pt.

Will be at LBL October 19th and 20th bow hunting, and again in November.

I've hunted it several times during a draw hunt and had great luck but never bow hunted it. Where do you bow hunt with the most luck? Hardwood ridges or on the edges of ag fields?

Your better off hunting in the hardwoods after the first few weeks of season. The crops typically get a lot of pressure during the first few weeks of season. So finding natural food sources, bedding areas, funnels, and pinchpoints in the hardwoods is what you want to look for.

I'll be up there several weekends. I love LBL. I'll be up there for the quota hunt also if I'm drawn this year. Just never know what your gunna see up there.

Nope, I've Never seen any Hogs at LBL. Many Deer, many Turkey, And one Bobcat has been it for me while Deer hunting.

The Hog population really seems to be expanding and increasing on the south end of LBL. I know people who have seen them down in areas 15 and 16. And as for Bobcats I've seen several myself. There is a healthy Bobcat population in every hunting area/unit in LBL. Armadillos are another species that are really increasing in population in LBL. I've seen several in just the last few months. It's really amazing how many Armadillos live in LBL these days.

I generally spend close to a month every year at LBL. Already have cabins rented at Wranglers this season and can't wait for the Juvi hunt with my son.

When would you say was the best dates for seeing rut activity on LBL?

Thanks for the info

Seen several Rattlers up there here is a 5 footer, around 5 years ago about stepped on a monster 6+ foot snake. Still get chills when I think about it.

i was up riding around the Kentucky side of LBL last weekend doing some scouting. I also seen a timber rattler, at least 6 foot long. That thing gave me the chills as well lol.

There's a lot more Timber Rattlesnakes like that than what most people think. Usually people just walk right passed them and never notice them. What area was that snake in ?

And in my opinion the best time to hunt the rut in LBL really depends from year to year, but usually from around November 8th to November 20th is when I see a lot of Bucks chasing does.

Last season I saw a Copperhead about the same size as that rattler. It was very early in the morning and it was curled up under some ferns against a tree. It was truly an amazing sight.

BTW yes, I will be hunting LBL again this year. I spend the majority of my hunting at LBL. I was drawn last year but didn't connect with the buck I was wanting. Can we place trail cameras throughout LBL? Can we leave deer blinds up at LBL during season?

Yes, you can place Trail Cams in LBL. However, it's important to remember a lot of people, campers, hikers, hunters etc use LBL. So if you use a Trail Cam make sure to put it in a place where people can't see it. And yes you can place Treestands in LBL also. But again it's a good idea to place them in places where people won't find them.

I thought about using LBL to use in my cyber scout tutorial i plan to put together showing how i go about my cyber scouting process when laying out a new piece of property to scout for deer..

I killed my biggest buck on LBL.
My 11pt I killed at LBL stayed my biggest buck for a few years. Untill it was passed by a Real monster 8 I took a few years later on my hunting lease.

My dad was hunting about 200 yards away from me at LBL once when he shot and missed what would have been his biggest buck. he has killed some nice deer to including a 13pt,but he swears the deer he missed that morning was bigger.

There are definitely some big Bucks in LBL. I have seen Bucks that would go over 160 inches in LBL. But like I said they are often scattered out onto a large amount of forested land and ridges so getting them in range is often difficult. The Hunter success rate in LBL is lower than surrounding counties, however several big Bucks are taken each season in LBL you just got to be in the right place at the right time. A lot of people who hunt LBL each season simply are not used to hunting big woods ecosystems so they often don't really hunt the right places and they often loose patience so they are not successful. But if you are patient and scout and learn how to find pinch points, funnels, natural food sources etc in the forested ridges you can be successful each season in LBL.

I've been hunting LBL since 1964 and part of that was before TVA took over to start LBL. First deer I ever shot in my life was taken in the Tennessee part of LBL and was a 14 point buck.

Seen several good size bucks over the years in LBL.

The last year I hunted at the TeDeer/LBL opener camp I found a fresh snake skin at the bottom of my treestand as I was coming down from the morning hunt. I have a picture of me holding it with my arm all the way above my head and it's touching the ground. To think I walked right by him in the dark climbing my stand made me think different.

That's a great picture. They may be moving north into LBL from surrounding counties. Have you seen anymore hogs before in that area ?
