I have a misdemeanor charge from 1972 that has kept me from buying a pistol.
Does that apply to rifles too?
And I know that a misdemeanor should not be a disqualifier, but since it was so long ago, and there was no follow up as to the final adjudication, TBI keeps rejecting me.

I would think if you can't buy a pistol legally you can't legally buy a rifle either…

You just shot yourself in the head for anybody here selling you a firearm, thats why. I am not at this time bound by law to know ANYTHING about you in order to sell you a firearm in a face to face transaction. HOWEVER, to KNOWINGLY sell you a firearm now that I, along with everybody else on this forum knows that you cant pass a background check to buy a firearm, yeah thats a giant red flag. Sorry bro, Im OUT.

And yet, I've had two gunshops sell me a pistol on a "conditional" .
So, how does that work?
AND I was given a handgun carry permit in 2012 from the state of Tennessee.

You should be able to appeal a denial with the TBI if the only charge you have is a misdemeanor from 50 years ago. Or better yet get it expunged if it qualifies

Having lived with it here in TN for 12 years, not too worried about it.

Had aconcealed carry permit in Indiana fir years until I moved to Illinois.

Have my Handgun Carrry Permit here in TN, not that anyone needs one anymore.

That happened to me on a 20 or 30 year old misdemeanor charge of having a gun in my car in Illinois. It was dismissed and I had bought guns with background checks in other states over the years. TBI refused me here. I called them and they told me I had a weapons charge from Illinois. I told them it was dismissed and would not have been disqualifying if it hadn't been. They said it could be a felony in Tennessee. They gave me no useful information.

I contacted a friend at Illinois State Police, and he said all they were reporting was a speeding ticket. I called TBI back and they said there was nothing they could do.

Believe it or not it was the BATF that told me what it was and how to fix it. They told me my gun charge from years ago didn't have a disposition in the FBI database. They told me to contact the Circuit Clerks office and have them submit the disposition to the FBI. My daughter did that, and I haven't been turned down since. They told her it happens all the time.

Why did your attorney say he couldn't get anything done?

I don't remember what they said, it's been a while.
I've just let it go.
I've bought enough from private sellers to have most of what I need.
Shotguns for hunting (which I never do any longer), and are now loaded for home defense, pistols for EDC (2 of which were bought from local gunshops under "conditional" sales), rifle for deer hunting, which I do yearly, and a muzzleloader that I hunt deer with.
I was interested in an AR style weapon for home defense seeing as how we are getting such an influx of illegals in this country.
If a siege were to occur, it could entail multiple aggressors nesscitating higher capacity firearms to conceivably repel such an attack.
Hopefully these possibilities never occur.
I thought my "warring" days were done once I quit walking point with my dog in Vietnam but with the way things are headed, I'd rather be prepared.
The photos are posted so that none may doubt my claim to have "been there, done that".
My dog, Mr Buck 7X74, was KIA two months after I returned home.

RIP Mr. Buck. Served me well, saved me multiple times.
