I used a kayak this past year for the first time ever...and thinking about getting one. I could see me getting one for fishing, especially in the smaller waters, where no gas motors are allowed. Might even try using it in Arkansas where I go fishing.

Anyone have or fish from a kayak? I know there are two different kinds, the sit in (closed face) and the sit on (open). Any pros/cons to them? I used the open sit on type in the Gulf last year and liked it for the 2 hrs I used it.

We fish out of ours all the time. We have some 9.5ft Preceptions that we use. Ours are closed hull, which helps with keeping your stuff dry.

Make sure you get one with a paddle holder on the side. We put rod holders in front of you. Mine is stable enough I can stand up and fish.

I've got 2 of them. A perception and a wilderness system. Both are sit on top kayaks. I fished out of them a lot before I hurt my back. My wife has been in ocean on the smaller one that's 10 foot. My fishing yak is 12.5. There are a lot of kayak fishing forums out there... just google it.

I don't really fit into a kayak very well

I am 6'4 and 300 pounds... I fish out of the 12.5 sit on top model. I can put both feet over one side and sit there all day. Probably could stand up in it but I have never tried. They are more stable and carry more weight than you think.

I liked the one I used in Pensacola Beach. I never felt like I was going to fall out or turn it over in the water. It seemed like it was pretty sturdy.

I don't know how well they would do in a river with a current, I've never used on in a river.

I have a 10 foot sit on a top pelican that I use. They are pretty fun but not as easy to use as I thought. I have found that to use them on most moving waters you have to get picked up down river, no use in trying to paddle back up. I guess that's where a 12 footer would help. I think my Kayak fishing would improve if I had a friend to go with that way we could park a car down river and just float fish to it, that's how it should be done.

I have a Ocean Kayak Drifter 12.5 ft sit on top. I used it a few times on the Caney and on the Harpeth. If you don't have a buddy to spot a vehicle downstream, it can be a BEAR paddling upstream when they are generating! If they aren't generating, you can easily paddle upstream on the Caney and then fish as you drift back toward your truck.

Now I have a Gheenoe and will probably sell my kayak.

Lots of fun. Ocean Kayak prowler trident. 13' and 15'

I fish out of a Pelican Castaway. Not an expensive model but works very well for me on these creeks and small rivers around here. Ive done a couple of 6-8 hour floats with stops to eat and been fine.

I liked the sit on top. But if you are wearing shorts on them, you'll need some sunscreen on your legs...unless you don't mind sunburned legs. :D

Travis, that doesn't look like a sit on top...looks like your legs are inside the hull. Doesn't matter, whatever works well for you is what counts.

I have a sit inside Native Ultimate 12...it looks a bit like a short, wide canoe. Its stable and you don't get the wave splash that you get with a sit on top...more important in the winter time than in summer.

That being said, I like the sit on tops alot. In particular, I've been looking at the Freedom Hawk 12...I like the outriggers that it has which would make stand up fishing possible.

I would like to fish from a kayak. I've been eyeballing the jackson brand kayaks, either the coosa, or the cuda. Both BUILT RIGHT HERE IN TENNESSEE. Hard to argue the logic of getting that brand. =)

If any of you guys are around Sevierville or Kodak, I wouldn't mind letting you try one of mine before you buy. Like I said earlier, I have a 12.5 and a 10. The larger is a perception angler kayak and the smaller is the Wilderness Systems tarpon 100. Just send me a pm.

Oh yea that is a rental I think haha I'll have to post a pic of my actual kayak when I get a chance. Mine is almost the same color as the rental I'm using in the picture.
