When are yall putting first fall seeds in the ground. Im going to try to do a little earlier this yr because the past 2 its gotten incredibly constipated in september. May get some seeds in the ground by august 20 instead of sept 1st as usual.

Wheat, brassicas, clover.

I was thinking I might plant a little early this year to if the rains continue. Just hope for enough to keep it alive through Sept

Used to be Labor Day every year. Now it's mid Sep - mid Oct whenever the rain is coming. 25% Rye, 75% oats (100 lbs total grains) and some crimson this year. If you have brassicas, they'll need to be slightly earlier. Our deer don't like them

Army worms, drought, and plants getting mature to early and loosing palatability are all reasons to wait.

October is our driest month according to weather channel. September is 2nd driest. I dont know what to do. Last 2 years were drought riddled for me.

Last 3 years we've had a drought in the fall. It makes it tougher. But in October when it's not as hot a young plant can handle it better. We time it with a rain and then hope we get one 7 to 14 days after then we are good for the most part. Went 100 percent no till helped a lot to. Anything to help keep the moisture in. Brassicas are fine early. But I would plant cereals grains this early. We have wasted way more money planting early we haven't had a food plot fail since we pushed it back. They may not be 100 percent but better then early for us. We have had to replant a ton when we planted early.

Yes it has been!

And by the look of things, we may be headed that way again. Haven't had rain in 3 weeks and my place is getting VERY dry. Raise a cloud of dust driving down the roads.

And to answer the original question, this year I'm planting later. Mid-September whenever rainfall forecasts look adequate.

That is when we usually plant. But with all the rain we have had as of recent compared to last year and with the longer range forecast showing rains through the month for us it has me thinking of try for late this month. We don't have enough acres of plots for the number of mouths were trying to feed, even on years they do great they still barley survive browse pressure. that would lead me to think if the moisture looks decent try and hope for rain but if not I could always just drill straight wheat and rye 1st of Oct to make something happen if it was a failure. What are your thoughts?

Everything i plant says 45 to 60 days before avg first frost date, which is october 18. So thats roughly aug 18 till sept 3rd.

I sprayed the first day of august
I'm out til sept 1. I sprayed round up late June . Wish I would of added 24d to the tank
No clue why I did not
So here we are with huge broadleaves
Hope I got em all

It's hard for me to plant anything when I look and there is no rain being forecasted . I've staggered my planting all the way into late October with good results .

Agree with that. Looks like the rain is gone for the next 3 weeks. Giess it will take a hurricane now

1.44" last 7 days, 7.33" last 30 & soil moisture is great. Definitely getting drier but I'm against a hard time line this year.

Thankfully have 31 perennial clover plots that are in great shape. Going to plant 3 brassica plots Saturday doing the BSK way. Will be a good bit of debris on top of seed, so it'll be there whenever it does rain.

That'll leave me 10 annual ones to do by Sept 15. Ordered 1550# of 75% wheat & 25% crimson mix the other day, will pick it up towards end of month.

After staggering amounts of rain all spring through the first week of July, now the rains have completely turned off at my place. Last decent rain was July 12th. Not a drop since, and none in the forecast for the rest of this week. Surface soil is now so dry I raise a cloud of dust driving the roads.

I'm a big fan of drilling once anytime starting end of August with adequate moisture, then just broadcasting cereal rye to fill in the smaller plots early October.

Picked up a super bad of wheat yesterday from a local farmer. 1500 pounds for 215.00. I have clover and brassica mixes to put out and about 200 pounds of forage soybeans. i know its late for them but they need to be used and i know they wont have time to make pods. i have 16 acres of ag soybeans on my land now so this is just an early bow draw in a small secluded field. guess i will just pray for rain

Models are starting to look better for next week. But this week, at least for West TN, nothing.
