With cold temps this morning I knew I was going to hunt somewhere I just wasn't sure exactly where on the property I would set up. I am definitely a novice hunter so I hunt primarily for meat for me and the family and the additional experience in the woods with the hopes of being a better hunter next season. Earlier in the week I asked for opinions on which type of spot to hunt and the suggestions I received were essentially what my gut told me so the affirmation was nice to hear.

I snuck into hunting property around 5:30 this morning because I had a long walk uphill to the plateau raining acorns in the core of the property. I like getting in early to give the woods time to calm down and I also enjoy hearing the woods wake up in the morning. Anyway, just as I hoped, around 9:30 I heard a deer coming right towards my location. To my surprise it was a buck (my second of the season) so when he got to 30 yards I let one fly and connected.

I have made it a focus over my previous two hunting seasons to try to learn from every hunting trip and I completely changed my hunting style this year. To this point in the season I have already seen more deer from my treestand than I have the previous two combined and I've been able to capitalize on it. This guy was buck #3 in my lifetime, #2 on my season and deer #4 for me since I started hunting.

He field dressed at a little over 100lbs. Not a monster by any stretch but it's meat in the freezer and I'm happy that I have been able to get my first two archery harvests this season. Next season I may change my goals to harvest a more mature deer but for now I am on doe patrol and strictly watching/learning for the remainder of the season. And the best part was I had help from my youngest daughter unloading it at the processor.

Awesome! It's always good to learn something from every hunt. Maybe by the end of the season you can learn to process deer by yourself and save some money

Congrats! Two things you're going to discover:

1) You never stop learning.
2) When you think you've learned it all they teach you something else...humility is at the top of the list.

You're at the very best point of deer hunting. Sure it's nice to capitalize on what you've learned but when everything you do and see is a new experience and you're learning on the fly while trying to apply that knowledge you're smack dab in the middle of a deer hunting adventure. Enjoy that feeling. After years of hunting it seems to fade away.

Great shot and your Daughter is cute as a button!!!!!

Thanks. She always insists on going with me to drop the deer off at the processor as well as pick up the meat. She has been begging me to take her hunting so I think next season we will be sitting in a ground blind together early season just like I did with her older sister. Should be a good time.
