I found a pretty good spot with lots of sign on it today at Royal Blue, my question is how should I hunt it? The spot is basically some old strip mining spots that have ridges and woods around. There are roads connecting the individual fields have been bushhogged besides one of them... The road that wasn't had a massive rub on it and quite a few down the road. While walking this road I also saw a couple of does. No clear shot for me, but I was relieved to actually see deer! I found quite a few scrapes on field edges that seemed to be fresh. The road with the rub kinda seemed like a funnel. So where would the best place be to have a good setup? By some of the fresher scrapes or over the road that had all the rubs? I have killed deer before, but I think I was lucky more than anything, just trying to learn a little more strategy.

If the wind is right I would set up in the funnel area. I don't get to hyped up about hunting scrapes or rubs. It just shows me there is a buck in the area. Jmo. Good luck and let us know how ya do.

I can understand that, I think I was to happy to find sign of a buck.

Funnel over any scrape or rub. And btw we are all lucky to kill deer, skill and preparation get you there luck finishes the deal.

In the area you saw the does. Be my guess, the deer are walking the roads if they don't get vehicle travel. I would not set up over scrapes or rubs. I would look for travel trails.

They don't get vehicle travel. I am thinking I'll pick a good tree and setup around the road that way I can see up the ridge as well.

If the roads are not traveled the deer wil luse them a lot ! I love hunting old roads and road beds. Deer are like us, if there is an easier route they will use it.

My experience has been the majority of sign made in these roadbeds by mature bucks is done at night! They just rarely walk an open roadbed during daylight unless a doe is leading them down it.
