I hope this is an ok spot for this but I wanted to introduce myself and tell y'all about my sons first deer season. I was an active member back in the day and got away from this forum as well as hunting for a while as life was just too hectic.
My son turned 9 last August and has been wanting to deer hunt. He's spent some time in the woods with me before, but this was going to be his year. For his birthday, he got a Savage 243 with a Leupold scope on top. We spent a lot of time shooting and getting comfortable with shot placements. We were invited to hunt the KY youth weekend in October and made the trip with pawpaw as well as my brother in law and his 12 year old. In 2 days, we spent roughly 19 hours in a blind - all his idea. I basically had to force him to go back to camp and take a break. We didn't see any deer. He was bummed, but stayed positive and was excited for his cousin who bagged a small 8 point and a doe. Towards the end of November, he was invited to come back and get another hunt in. We return, pull in to camp around 12:30. He immediately starts bugging me about heading to stand. I spent 45 minutes unloading the truck, setting up, and telling him, "hang on! We'll get there! It's still early!" At 1:20 were in the stand, and 1:50, he shoots a trophy. This was easily the shortest hunt I've ever had. But it's also easily the best hunt ever. The memories we've shared, just in his first season are incredible. I love coaching, I love hunting, and I love being a dad. But there are few memories as awesome as those made in the woods. Glad to be back on TNdeer, and also, shoutout to Catman...he may have taught my son more about hunting than I have! Keep up the awesome videos, we've seen them all, at least 3 times!
