I read a similar thread on another board that was very interesting & entertaining. :D So I thought I'd see what the Tennesseean's have to say.

OK..You are going to hunt Antelope, Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Black Bear, and Elk. Those are the 5 species you will be hunting.
You can only get one gun. You want a bolt action.

Which will it be: 7mm mag, 30-06, 308 or 270.

I think that is fairly close to the way it was worded on the other site. No adding other calibers to your answers.
Just pick ONE caliber you would hunt ALL species listed.

You can post all four in the order you would take them, & why.

I own a .270 and .30-06, so one of those. A .308 is a ballistic twin of the .30-06 until you get to 180gr bullets, where the greater powder capacity takes over in the .06, so it would not be a bad choice, either. If I were to have a magnum it would be a .338, I don't see much of a point in a magnum any smaller in diameter, so that rules out the 7mm Mag... Just my .02.

This rifle right here...Winchester Model 70 chambered in .270 Win with a McMillan Edge stock.

1). 7mag with 160 Barnes. This combo will kill essentially anything with a pulse at any range you have business trying!
2). Turty naught six with 180 Barnes.
3). 308 (short naught six) 165 Barnes.
4). 270 with 150 Barnes.

I take it you like Barnes Bullets? :D

Notice I didn't put down any specific distance you'd be shooting, & that's what really got everybody arguing on the other thread!

Not trying to start one here, though. I read it & just assumed the original poster that asked the question meant at any reasonable range. But that must not be how the other readers took it! They was hollering about BC & SD within X number of yards. It got kinda funny. I can't find the dang thing now. I was gonna post a link to it so ya'll could get a laugh like I did..

I'm not sure even which one I'd pick..I think I might go with 06.
But leaning heavily towards the Big 7...

1. 7mm...mainly because I have one. :D I'd have to borrow the other calibers.

2. 308...mainly because I am considering getting one.

It'd be a tie between the 30-06 and the .270. Nothing against them, as I haven't shot one yet. I'm sure I couldn't go wrong with either, it'd just be a matter of fit/preference/etc. But the 7mm and the 308 hold my interest for now.

1: 270, with a130-160 gr bullets, it will do anything the others mentioned will do
2: 30-06, the jack of all trades and master of none
3: 308, this would be in my top 2 if elk werent listed, but still a good all around choice
4: 7 mag, I am not a 7 fan, I dont need it to say magnum, or have the extra length, weight, muzzle blast, recoil, or expense to kill any of the stuff mentioned. I consider a 7 mag a loud, heavy, cumbersome 270.

I would pick a 270. Why, that is what I have hunted with for over twenty years and I love the round. Used to hunt with a 308; tried the 270, and fell in love with the round. :)

I have a 7mm and love a flat shooter. The reason I bought it was partially the choices given. That being said I am now looking at a .270 because it shoots so flat and the cost of shooting store bought shells are alot more reasonable for the .270. Just a thought.

30-06 due to it's slight edge over the 308 for bear and elk, plus the availability and large selection of ammo from 45 grain to 220 grain and everything in between.

30-06 so many bullets. U can go from 100 gr varmint to 220 gr engine block busters.

I hate to say it but drop me off with one rifle and reload stuff. I would not want my fav 308.

The old 06 is king

I love dad's .30-06 its never failed me in the field. But i got a .270 and with hornady superformance sst, it's very accurate and flat shooting, but i haven't had the chance to shoot in the field. That being said the .270 is my choice. Like huntr2 said it's as flat shooting as a magnum without the extra kick, or being too expensive to shoot.

30-06 is my favorite round between them. With the versatile ammunition out there, you can really hunt anything from deer to elk to boar, and not have to worry about following blood all evening.
