Will I notice a difference? The scope I ordered from swfa.com is on backorder but they do have it in stock with the 44mm obj as opposed to the 50mm. Will it make that much difference in the view, light gathering, etc? This is a Vortex Viper 6.5-20X btw.

you wont notice it at all I have a 40, 44, and 50 and there isn't any difference that I can notice from the 44 to the 50. you'll be able to tell just looking at the gun with the scope one it. you may would have notice it more from a 3omm tube.

Going on a 7mm Rem mag I plan to start building here soon. On a savage action. Mostly a target/long range hunting rifle. Probably set up on some huge bean fields in unit L and wack a few does. Or may take it west in the near future on an antelope/muley hunt.

You will only notice an advantage to 50 over 40 in the very early and very late day, when previously murky maybe's turn out to be a deer or elk. I have never used a 45 bell but you should have some benefit over a 40 and less than a 50. if at all possible, a 30MM tube will transmit more light than just getting a big objective lens.

There is some misinformation in some of the replies. A 30mm tube WILL NOT transmit more light. The 30mm tube has an advantage over the 1" tube for windage and elevation only. It has no effect what so ever on light transmission. Light transmission is effected by the size of the objective lens. You won't notice a difference at all during the day. Dawn and dusk is where you will see the most difference, especially at high power due to exit pupil.

I personally don't like 50mm objective lens scopes because my head sits too high of the buttstock.

Not trying to argue but he would have to have them side by side in twilight hours before he would ever be able to tell a difference and even then I'd say it wouldn't be much. Before I would pay more for a 50mm objective I would buy a higher caliber 40mm with better glass. That's just my opinion though.

I agree that he probably wouldn't see a difference, except for at max magnification in low light. Even then the difference wouldn't be that much. The Vortex Viper is no slouch in the optical quality department. The ED glass and new coatings the Vipers have will give the high end Euro scopes a run for their money.

A 44mm will mount lower to the barrel, which is a good thing. I hate a 50mm objective.

amen. i will not go bigger than a 40mm. if it won't fit in low rings, i won't use it. the closer the line of sight is to the muzzle, the better the accuracy . also unless it is a high comb stock, a 44 or 50 will be bit high for proper head alignment

Thanks guys. Went with the 44mm. They had it in stock and was a little cheaper. Can't wait to start this project.

Lol. What? Don't let this gun hear you say that.

Your goal should be to close your eyes, mount the gun, and open your eyes with a clear picture through the scope.
