I'm in the process of building a rifle in .300 wm or 7mm mag. I can't make my mind up on which caliber to go with. I know either one will do the job. With a good selection of 7mm bullets that isn't a issue anymore. I'll be loading the 168 Berger VLD's in which ever I decide on. Lets hear some input I need to order the barrel this week.

only thing I can add: bullet choices run out about 175gr for 7mm

otherwise party on-flip a coin

I'm going to shoot the 168 VLDs in which ever I choose. I shoot 190 SMKs out of my heavy 300WM. I already have plenty of new brass for the 300WM. But I kinda have a itch for a fast 7.

I built one last year and had the same problem. I finally eliminated the 300 Winchester Mag because of problems fitting bullets seated into the lands into the magazine box. That cartridge is really just a little bit too long for a long action unless magazine box alterations are done. I went to a decision between a 30-338 (308 Norma Mag) and the 7mm Rem Mag both of which would work well in a standard long action. The 30-338 would have required me to buy quite a bit a new reloading dies, etc. so the 7mm won out. I'm convinced that for a beanfield rifle in Tennessee the right caliber won out. Less recoil than a 300 caliber and it shoots great and will carry up as far as I have any business shooting.

If you're going to build it...

No doubt in my mind...

7mm RUM, Dakota, or at least an STW. Set it up to shoot the 180gr Bergers. That bullet is so incredible it's worth building the gun around it.

Mine topped out at 3350 with 140`s. For long brass life 3300 is easy beezy. This from a 26" barrel.

STW is larger case and will top out over 3400 with 140`s.

My 7/338RUM tops out at 3700 fps with 140`s, but kills brass at this speed.

You might want to look at the 280AI. 7mm mag level performance without having to fool around w/ those belted cases.

I have loaded for 7 Rem Mag, 7 RUM, 280 and 280AI. You gotta love 7mm bullet performance and all the options.

But I thought the Ackley was the best overall performer in terms of working up a load, ease of loading and getting a lot of bang for the reloading dollar.

Not a bad idea. I've thought about that one.

Kenny Jarrett told me a few years ago he thought the 280AI was the best overall rifle cartridge in existence. IMO, he knows his business about as well as anybody.

Yeah, he's made that cartridge much more popular with his beanfield rifles and he knows a lot more about accuracy than most of us.

I'm liking the 7 wsm -really easy to load for.

I'd also like to have the 7 Dakota. I've got the 300 Dakota, but I'm a 7 fan.

Good luck-

Build them both. All rolled into 1.

I have a 7mm/300WM reamer. :D

I second that!!! But I am bias since I own one . Its the fastest deerputterdowner I have ever pointed at a whitetail pushing Accubonds

My cousin has basically the same cartridge except with a weatherby improved shoulder. He's taken deer at 670 yards no problem.

But again, if the sky's the limit (ie, I were building a rifle from scratch), I would build a 7mm to push the 180gr bergers around 3200 fps. That would be 'Hand of God' effect out to 1000 yards. You wouldn't be able to beat the BC (aside from custom bullet makers) unless you stepped up to 300gr SMK outta the .338 cals.

Hmm, I may have talked myself into one... anybody got a 7 RUM sitting around?

As far as an all-around rifle, it would be impossible to beat the .280AI.

I am partial to the .284 calibers. High BC bullets are likely the reason

The 7mm bullets have a little better BC. But I have decided to go with the 30 cal. I just ordered my barrel from Hart this morning. 1-10" twist, .30 cal, #5 contour going to finish at 26". I'm going to load the 168 Berger VLDs.
