30/30

That's my rifle of choice here where I hunt. My ole Marlin hasn't let me down. It's scarred up on the stock, due to me dragging through the brush when I was young, dumb and....well you know the rest.

Thought about breaking mine out, just need to go and shoot it to check the zero as it has been in the safe for a long time.

Watched a YouTube video where a guy was on a "cowboy style" Bison hunt. He took a bull with a 30-30 from horseback.

I never questioned a 30-30 before. I assure you I never will now. The huge beast dropped after a brain shot. Almost fell on its big face.

I don't any more but, started out with one. Never had a problem, really. I could probably go back to one if need be.

I find myself picking up a peep sighted 30/30 quite a bit for the type of cover I hunt. I don't have a single complaint with it, and its my favorite even though I hunt with some bolt actions sometimes. A lever action is a joy to carry and at times I wonder why I'd ever need anything else where I hunt.

Dont really understand the question "is it still a deer killing machine"? Have the deer developed a tougher hide or something I am not aware of over the past 30 years.

I've been carrying my Marine exclusively for the past 3 seasons. I just leave my 30-06 in the safe. The 30-30 takes care of all my hunting ranges.

That looks like mine. I'm about to start taking it out the rest of the season to punch my last doe tag. I've never killed anything with it, but it was the first rifle that I ever owned.

No the deer are the same but I think the 30/30 is a forgotten round these days,so many calibers to pick from. :stir:

I see what you did there, :D

I've been fortunate enough to kill a bunch of deer with different cartridges and rifles, and I haven't ever found the 30/30 to be a slouch at woods ranges. The shortest blood trails I've had have been with 150 grain Sierra Flat Points. Penetration has been awesome from any reasonable angle, as well.

Hope you have good luck with it. It works very well. I've come full circle on rifles and cartridges and for the way and places I hunt, it'll probably be all I will use most of the time.

Wait....well...then there is my .375, my 45/70's, .44 mags....oh crap I like em all.
