284 Hornady 154g sst question

Anyone using this bullet? How does it perform? I've been reading about it, and looks like the key is to keep below 3k fps. This isn't going to be an issue since it's for a 7/08. For out to 250 yards or so...would the interlock be better?
Any real world experience would be appreciated.

A friend of a friend uses them in his 7 Rem Mag and has had no issues from real close out to around 200yds. I can't see the 708 over stressing them.

Let me ask you another question...please.
16.5" barrel....8.5 twist 7/08. Bullet suggestions??
I know the short barrel will give up quite a bit of velocity...but this is going to be a rifle for woods/still hunting. What would you suggest??

Well, that should be a dandy rifle I will say that. Bullet wise it would be tough to pick a bad one I think.


From the tests I've seen and what I've read the 139gr Hornady Flat Base is a bad mammer jammer. They were unavailable when I got my 708's but are available now. I use the 139 BTSP Hornady and the 140 Accubond from my two 708's but for deer the 140 AB seems a bit tough. The tip on 154 SST would promote expansion and the lower velocity would limit stress. I'm going to order some of the 139 Flat Base for next season just to test out.


Any of the 139 Hornady except the CX or the 154 SST would be a solid choice. Nosler 120-140 Ballistic Tip, Sierra 140's as well.

I recently picked up a box of (now discontinued) Hornady 154g RN. I would love to be able to use them. Finding a powder that will work with that combo... without being a flame thrower, might be a challenge. I've been researching online and varget and Imr 4064 keep coming up...as does h4350. Unfortunately, I don't have any of those. I've been down sizing and the last thing I want to do is hunt down and buy another bunch of powders to try.

3031 and h4895 are dynamite in my 2 with 130-150 class bullets
