I use to have a Cousin who was very knowlegable in rifle calibers and reloading who really liked this caliber. I've been thinking about getting one of these. I currenlty have other calibers, but have seen a ruger all weather with the skeleton stock and stainless that maybe I just want more than I need. What are y'all's opinions of this caliber? Any of you shoot it? Are the Winchester 140g Ballistic Silver Tips a good choice?
Thanks

It is the same as the .270 Win, just .007 larger diameter and slightly longer to prevent accidental chambering in the .270... a 30-06 necked down to .284 caliber (a .270 is a 30-06 necked down to .277). The .280 came along later than the .270, so it never gained the traction that the .270 already had because there were no true ballistic gains. But there is more variety in .284 bullets to choose from, though the .270 is plenty adequate in this department as well.

All in all there is no real difference in the .280 and .270 except if you want to use heavier bullets (advantage .280) or if you want to buy factory ammo (advantage .270).

I just recently became the new owner of a 280 myself. I've wanted one for awhile now and after 6 months of waiting on Remington, mine came in a couple of weeks ago. I have a good buddy who has a Ruger 280 and he has probably killed a 100 deer with his. Sucker won't part with it for nuthin'.

1 caliber I have wanted for a long time that I have never as yet fixed the want on.

I have a tang safety ruger M77 in 280, that I bought about 10 years ago and have never put a shell in it.

I bought it because they quit making them. Don't really need it, but I will keep it.

I also have 2 7mm mag and a 338 ruger m77 and 270 mod 700 bdl.

I would not have the 270 if I had found the 280 first.

I have long desired to make that caliber(280) my one "go to" gun for all types of deer cover and set ups, but it never materialized. I was very close to making that a reality this Spring.

I flinched and went with 6.5 X 284

I would have gone the 6.5 route over the 280 route as well. Look at the #s on the 130 gr Swift Scirocco. I have never been a 7 bore fan. If I were to get a 7 bore of some sort, it would be a 284 Win or a 7x57, those are the only 7s that even come close to interesting me. As far as the 270 vs 280 debate, flip a coin, they are so close, its not really worth arguing about.

the .280 Rem is probably the most versatile hunting cartridge in existance... while there are better rounds for particular applications, there is no better all-around cartride capable of handling everything in existance from ground squirrels to just short of dangerous game. If I were limited to just one hunting rifle for everything, it would be in .280 Rem- hands down.

I am a proud owner of a Remington CDL 280... It is the most accurate rifle I own. When I need a rifle to get the job done, I carry my 280. I get some really nice groups. Try to post later but not sure how to post pictures here. Some help would be appreciated.

For 280longshot...

I had a Ruger M-77 a long time ago. At that time they called it a 7mm Express. It was even stamped on the barrel.
Shot great but I had a hard time finding ammo and when I did it was pricey.
Like I said that was a long time ago and if you shot something besides a 30-30 or 30-06, you'd better load up on your ammo when you found it.
Supposed to be a great round for reloading.

Name was changed from 7mm express to 280 I think, to eliminate confusion. Some would go to a gunshop, ask for 7mm..when ask 7mm what, they didn't know there was more than one 7mm. Or they would send their wives to get a box of '7mm whatever', and the wife would ask for 7mm somethings..I worked thru Christmas in a friends sporting goods store one year. Some of the characters that came in, well, I wouldn't want to be in thesame patch of woods.

I agree with everything here. I'd be perfectly happy with the 280 IF I didn't already have a 270. Since I've yet to hunt anything larger than a whitetail, my main interest is in .264 or .257 caliber bullets.

243, 7mm-08, 308????? same deal

i would also throw 25-06 into the mix of the calibers u listed.

i think long ago when you had like 2 bullet choices for each caliber yes. but now with the advancment in bullets and their ballistics. prob not

I love the 280 myself. I hunted with an A Bolt 280 for several years. Got the fever for a magnum and like an idiot I traded it off. Great caliber for deer.

Now as far as the ballistic tips go they are accurate and have killed many deer just by the simple fact that they are used a lot. They have also wounded and left many deer for the buzzards.
Barnes TSX or TTSX is the bullet to shoot. JMHO
