Give me your thoughts on this caliber!

Was down at gander mtn yesterday and got a deal on a Ruger m77 in 280 caliber!
only thing I was unsure about was the caliber! seems ammo is pricy and kinda hard to find!

is this a pretty decent round if you can find ammo in it?

Reloading is the best way to go on the 280, and many here will tell you that it is considered one of the better all around mid caliber chamberings that you will find. You will see a lot of custom rifles that are AId in this particular round.

What he said.

The reason ammo is a little hard to find it isn't as popular a caliber as the 270 and 3006's but every bit as good.May have to hit Gun shows or order to find the ammo you want for it.
 
I've got one in model 700 mtn rifle in 280 one of my favorite rifles. But I also reload so ammo isn't a big worry

Yeah BA the 280 is a great round and in a great caliber(7mm). Of course it is basically a 7mm/06 so how could it be bad? Personally I always liked it a little better than the .270 because of a larger selection of bullets in different weights and also because it is just not as common. Back a few years ago I killed several mule deer in the high country of Wyoming with a custom barreled .280 on a Rem 700 action. Go for it; and imo the Ruger 77s, especially the newer ones, are the best pure hunting rifles of the regular otc rifles. Plateau Hunter
 
Great round I've been using mine since 1987. 150 grain core lokt can't be beat for deer, bear, boar, elk------etc etc. Tack driver knockdown power & if so important less recoil than it's brother 7mm mag
