Felt like i was hijacking another thread cause of all the questions I had and have others....this will be my first time apply for any quota......i want to get my name in at PI but there are two options one to hunt just Ensley Unit and one to hunt all except Ensley Unit.....which is better if you had a pick i know getting drawed at all is a surprise and why do they separate em

Also what other draw hunts can i put in for that have potential of bucks like PI

I also have a type 004 so can I apply for as many as I want?

I'm not positive but I think ensley unit is a separate chunk of land a short ways away from the island and it's just a big chunk of woods. The island is a mix of timber surrounded by big fields and river. More bucks have been killed off the island than ensley.

What do you mean do it over? Is there a limit on applications you can put in?

only 1 application per hunter. i think he means he wouldn't waste the last few years putting in for a hunt he had no chance to get.

No if you put in for another hunt and get drawn you will not get any preference points for pi

So i cant put in an app to PI then put one in for Catoosa then one in for oak ridge?

If you are unsuccessful in drawing ANY quota hunt, you receive a preference point for the next year's drawing. Whenever you are finally drawn for a hunt, ALL of your preference points go away.

It is taking 7-8 preference points to get a PI hunt. The only way to make sure that you will accumulate that many is to ONLY put in for PI. That means you will go 7+ years before getting drawn for anything.

If you want to go on a quota hunt SOMEWHERE, you can put it for up to (X)(I don't know the total)each year. There are some WMAs such as Catoosa where you stand a chance of getting drawn with 0 preference points. On others, you may need 2-3.

But, if you get drawn for ANY quota hunt, all of your preference points go away. Therefore, if you are wanting to go to PI and are willing to forgo any other quota opportunities, you put in only for PI for the next 7 years. If would not matter which unit you put in for since you are not getting drawn with no preference points.

You are limited to one application a year. It is actually a violation to do more than one quota application pre year (the elk hunt is a different hunt and is OK to put in for as well).

Hope that makes the process a little clearer.

If limited to one app then how are guys putting in for multiple spots

You can put in for up to 15 different hunts on one application.

you can also put in for the main quota drawing, and a vacancy drawing on that application.

To farther clarify, for the annual TWRA WMA Quota Deer Hunts:

There is annually only one (1) application, completed one (1) time, and there is (1) initial drawing. You will get drawn in the order of your priorities (up to 15 hunt choices), so long as vacancies exist when your name (or party) is drawn. It is your choice whether you find only one hunt an acceptable option, or whether you're willing to accept a different hunt should your 1st choice be filled before you're drawn.

But you will only be drawn for one (1) hunt in the initial drawing, and that will only happen if vacancies exist among your choices. Doesn't matter whether you select only 1 choice or 15 choices, you'll only get drawn for 1 hunt.

HOWEVER, you may enter a "2nd drawing" on that same application. Many people do not do this, simply because they do not want to be drawn for anything if they cannot get their 1st choice. Getting drawn for anything causes you to lose any accumulation of priority points.

The 2nd drawing simply fills any vacancies that might remain after the 1st drawing. So, yes, many hunters do in fact get drawn for two different hunts. But, again, getting drawn for anything causes you to lose any accumulation of priority points.

After reading this thread I feel like I should sit down and drink a cold beer and I don't drink.

Since all Preference Points are lost if you draw into any hunt, then after your first year of applying you should consider focusing your efforts on a single hunt. THAT is why applying for PI is a bad idea. You have years of applying and you don't dare apply for any other quote hunt, you could lose your place in the PI Line.

Best I can figure, the only way to guarantee you will gain a preference point (not be drawn) is to apply for President's Island WMA (with no 2nd choice, and no entry into the 2nd drawing on that application).

I suspect some people are applying for President's Island simply to gain and preserve preference points in those years when they already know they can't or prefer not to hunt any of the other choices. After one accumulates 2 or 3 preference points, he can be near guaranteed any 1st choice for any hunt (with exception to President's Island, which currently takes about 9 preference points to be drawn).

are your choices not the same for both drawings? if no vacancies exist for your choices in the first drawing, there will be no vacancies for your choices on the 2nd drawing.

Every year I hear someone say "I heard about a guy that got drawn for PI with no preference points at all!".

Drives me crazy how much misinformation gets passed around. There is no "I might get lucky on the draw" with that one. The start the drawing for folks with the most points, and the folks with the most points are 100% people waiting on President's Island.

If you start applying now, I bet it will be 8-10 years before going on that particular buck hunt. I THINK that the Ensley Unit, which is about 15-minute drive away from the main island, has slightly better odds.

Ensley bottoms is on the MS river floodplain on "the other side" of a Corps of Engineer levee. It's essentially 100% hardwoods/swamps based on the aerial photo. It's in an area with lots of big deer, but it's harder to hunt because of the lack of blatantly obvious terrain funnels.

It's actually true.
You can apply and get the antlerless deer weekend quota hunt on PI with no preference points. They'll even let you shoot a spike buck on this antlerless hunt! :D
