I am thinking about building a long range rifle on an old springfeild 30-06 action that I have. What are yalls opinions? 6mm,25,270,30,338 or any others?

I would build it in .308 and have the 'smith cut the chamber with a short leade/throat. Best of both worlds there...a long-action with a short leade. It will allow your handloads to still fit in the magazine ad allow you to set the COAL out enough to get to the rifling(if that is what she likes)

The 6.5-06 would be very nice. 130 Gr Swift Sciroccos have a BC of .571, which would be one flat shooting SOB, and would cover just about anything in the lower 48.

.280 or .280 AI

Without going to a magnum, that's the best there is for that action. Should get you to 1,000 yards with only 22MOA elevation.

I'd go with the 308 also or maybe a 270. Some of the actions on those old rifles can't handle the heavy magnum loads. I don't know the situation but if you actually have the whole rifle and it has not been sporterized, you ought to look into selling it and buying an action and maybe walking away with some money to put towards the rest of the project. Sometimes I don't think people realize that the old rifle they are about to sporterize is worth allot of money if they just leave it alone. It was very popular back in the 60's and 70's. There have been a couple of rifles on here that were sporterized and they look great and are fine weapons but if you go out an look at what that original rifle would be worth in mint condition, they could have sold it and practically have paid for their whole project. I realize that they probably got the rifles already sporterized and they just made them better.
