In my unscientific survey, people's favorite fish to CATCH was clearly bass (collectively), but smallmouth was a minsucule bit higher overall. Actually the highest number of people chose Largemouth as their 1st choice, however Smallmouth was higher for 2nd choice and others down the line, so that's why overall, it edged out LM. Crappie came in next with catfish a little behind crappie. Bluegill came along next and so on down the line. FYI, I was chastised by some for not including drum among my choices, But I was limited to ten possible answers.

Now for folks favorite fish to EAT. Crappie was by far the leader among my survey. However I honestly suspect it is skewed because that is what most people in my network here can catch and have the opportunity to eat.

In my humble opinion, if more people had the opportunity to catch and/or eat walleye/sauger (or yellow perch), those fish would have scored much higher. As the survey turned out, bluegill came in second place in the favorite to eat, followed by walleye/sauger. The BIGGEST SHOCKER for me in this entire survey is how many people considered largemouth bass their favorite fish to eat. More than 22 percent of respondents said largemouth bass is their first choice among favorite fish to eat. That is more than one out of five anglers. Among folks who called it their first choice, largemouth was actually second only to crappie (33.3%).

We all know that in most bass fishing circles, it is completely taboo to kill/eat a largemouth. But it appears a lot more people are eating them than we might gather from social media or discussion forums. Who knew?

Behind largemouth came smallmouth, however I am SURE those numbers are skewed greatly since I lumped them with spotted bass. Personally I have never eaten a smallmouth in my 69-year life, but I LOVE to eat spots.

do you think some folks messed up on the survey because you had to move the selections to the top? LMB was the first selection on both so maybe thats why it scored so high on the eating category.

ill admit im kind of dumb and i thougjt it was select one and hit submit until i read the knstructions closer.

but i will say a lot of bank fishermen around here do keep several large LMB to eat.

I had walleye for the first time last year. It was awesome. I don't know the first thing about catching them though.

Walleye and sauger are #3 on my list.
#1. Largemouth bass
#2. Yellow bass
#3. Walleye/sauger
#4. Sunfish species
#5. Perch
We don't like to eat smallmouth, crappie, catfish (of any ilk) and carp.
We'll eat white bass and hybrids on the rare occasion.

Perhaps... but on the "Favorite to Eat" question, folks had to "move" crappie to get it to the top, which most did. So I believe most people figured it out.

I know I screwed up. So my results skewed the survey

I am ashamed to say, I didn't do the survey, honestly I started it and looked at the first ? and I couldn't pick 1. then I realized I liked to catch just about any of them, what I enjoy is catching the type I am after weather its bass crappie ect... , eating well love crappie catfish walleye. Can't say which I like better, going to target bluegill soon I hope but filet size only so may be a challenge, not eat any in 20-30 years maybe more, at 1 time I loved to catch bass, still love it but I don't target them specifically, I suppose being a deer hunter and not specifically a buck hunter has corrupted my thought process 😂 . Let's not even bring salt water into the mix as there again I cant just pick 1 of anything 🤣.

Fish taste/texture has a lot to do with how it is handled immediately after catching and then how it is prepared/cooked. It's not hard to make an otherwise great tasting fish to be terrible!! I will pass on the fish that have rode around all day in bathtub temp livewell water until they are dead or almost dead...no matter what the species is.
