Very nice! Where was this at? How did you catch them? We need details. Haha

Nothing special. Slider rig on main line with plastic bead and swivel. Then a 12"-18" 30 lb flourocarbon leader with a 1/0 kahle hook With a 4"-8" mullet hooked through the lips.

Very nice. Love catching specs. I haven't caught many mackerel but I would assume they are about the same as far as fight.

Just think of'em as miniature Kings. I had my 2500 Sahara on a 7' light action ugly stick. I was fighting a blue when a 4-1/2 lb Spanish hit the 2500. My buddy grabbed it and landed the fish. He said you always here of "smoker kings" but on light action rods, that Spanish was a "smoker". Testament to good smooth drag. That fish had that little 2500 drag screaming for the first 30 secs.
That set up wasn't ideal but it was fun. I'm not sure why people think when they fish in the ocean, they gotta have 8'+ poles and 6000 size reels. The big stuff has its applications, but I fished mainly with two penn 4000's and a abu Garcia 6500 all on 7' med action ugly sticks. At no point, did I ever feel under gunned.

They gotta do something about the dolphins out there. I went this morning and we were catching Spanish and Kings but for every 1 we got in the boat, we lost 3 to the dolphins. That size rod and reel setup is fine for most fish, but put a 400+ lb dolphin on the other end, and it will burn the line off a 6000+ series reel. I had one King on that would have went 25-30 lbs. Dolphin grabbed it within 25 feet of the boat. All I got of it was the head. Every time we got on fish, the dolphins would show up and we'd have to move or they would get every mackerel you hooked.

I ain't fishing for dolphins. Hahaha. In all seriousness though, I never laid eyes on the first Pod or single dolphin all week, which is kinda weird. Never had a problem losing fish from the surf but we've Paid the tax man a lot off shore. Mainly hammerheads and barracudas. We got into a mess of small Cobia one time. All were ~30" and the baracudas would get every single one of'em about 20' from the boat. We finally just left.
