When my son was 7 I had him practice shooting his 20ga with 2 3/4" shells. When it came time to hunt I slipped a 3" in that I had patterned and he killed his first and only turkey. He didn't feel a thing. Hasn't hunted in several years now and about to be 23 in a few weeks.
 
My first experience with good recoil was a Model 629 with a 4" barrel. At 12 years old. A day I'll never forget. To my credit, I hung on to that sum'b*tch
 
I dare any of you to shoot one of the little short New England 10ga turkey guns with screw in chokes and a 3.5" shell….. Been there done that and will NEVER do it again. After the shot, I was in my back looking at the sky and had a black eye. This was back in high school around 2000-2001.

I had that exact 10 gauge and got rid of it.

A local guy was tired of packing his with the weight in the stock so he took it out. I think that shotgun weighted around 5.5-6lbs with the weight removed. He had a bird come in on his strong side and it had him twisted up against the tree. It broke his collar bone and separated his shoulder when he fired.

I had an 835 and shot 3.5" 2.25oz loads. I got spun around on a bird and when I fired it flipped me over on my side. I realized then that there was 0 reason to have that much recoil to kill a turkey. I got rid of it and got a youth 20 gauge and have never looked back.

My 410 with tss throws a better pattern than my 835 with any lead shell except longbeards.
 
man I will never forget (still vividly remember it to this day) when I was prob 8 or 9 my dad handing me an old single shot 20 gauge with no recoil pad. Told me to just shoot it up at this tree next to us loaded with crows. Gun was loaded with buckshot and when I shot that sucker it threw me back into my dads truck door lol. Took me some time after that to not close my eyes when I shot a shotgun.
