By rule, the fair catch signal is made above shoulder level.
And, by rule, an invalid fair catch signal ends the play and the receiving team cannot advance the ball.

From NCAA football rules:

A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery. If the catch precedes the signal, the ball is dead when the signal is first given.

Entertaining read tonight.

This game exemplified the typical Tennessee football yearly cycle.
Unrealistic expectations, followed by unfounded blame on loses due to some sort of bias against the Vols, followed by a mediocre bowl game where Vol fans find a reason to build up unrealistic expectations for next year. (repeat)

Although being ranked 97th in fewest penalties committed, Alabama had the lowest penalty yards in a game since 2018 vs Miss State.

You coached a great game and gave a helluva halftime speech to get those guys motivated. Good job coach! 🙄

He was trying to knock the ball out but even so was late to try it. Thought it could've been a flag for a late hit but didn't think he was maliciously trying to hit him in the head.
I saw the backside replay of that too and the running back wasn't down yet, TN player looked to be trying to knock the ball out. It did look suspect tho, till I saw that look from behind the line.

Since stats are being thrown around. I heard this was the second biggest comeback in the series.

Also, last year 90% of fans in the stands wore orange, this year only 10%

So many fans trying to defend this points to the obvious no call it was. Like lawyers trying to argue intent. He may have wanted to punch the ball but he got there late and instead hit the guy across the head and neck when down. That is what happened.

If the whistle had already blown, totally agree that it was a late hit. But I did see the replay(no audio) and the bama player was still up and wasn't down at that point.

See my post above where I said the intent was to hit the ball but missed and a flag could've been thrown.
