It does resemble a young red deer hind...ear color similar...nose similar...dark forehead....but most similar is the neck/cape hair is different in color from the main body hair color.....the deer in top picture does appear to be younger and it may be a different time of year. But either way....doesn't appear to be a whitetail.

The flared hair on the body and lack of white around the face and neck make it look like something other than a whitetail. But, It's a whitetail. It has the tail of a whitetail -- just tucked so it's not showing well. It has tarsal glands -- elk doesn't have them. In addition look at the inside of the ears -- lined white on the top part, like a whitetail.

I talked to my dad about the deer this evening. He said it's last years fawn and has always looked that way, even the face. It traveled with its mom last year but has been a complete loner this year. However, when it comes to my dads corn other deer show up as well and they mingle together……who knows.

I can tell you for certain my dad, Slim, knows all of "his" deer by name and characteristics lol.

I was thinking sika-whitetail hybrid. Heck, I don't even know if that's possible! But if your dad knows the deer, I'm sticking with his call. 👍

It looks like a young Whitetail with a heavy winter coat but strange variation in coloration on the head face and neck. No white throat patch either. The face looks strange because it has bulging cheeks, either from impactions or just a giant cud!

Whitetails and mule deer do interbreed where they cohabit and have hybrids. Don't know if whitetails and sika can interbreed though.

The deer in the op is unusual, missing white from it's belly, no white on the nose, and no white throat patch. If it were a color variant that had no white, there would be no white hair in the ears or under the tail. Would still think it possible someone had this deer get loose, and it just found it's way into the herd and sticks with the herd hitting the corn.

The shaggy hair around the neck and different color sure make it look to not be a whitetail. Been a while since we have been, but think we have seen similar deer at the safari park.
