I'm not aware of any varieties. Whatever you plant, be sure you have people you can give some away, otherwise, you won't be able to eat all the squash that plant will put out. And make sure you give it at least 6' of room. Those things get HUGE. There's absolutely nothing you can do to screw up a zucchini plant. I'm about certain they'd grow on concrete.
 
We grind them up and put freeze a few cups in a bag to use for Zucchini bread and Zucchini chocolate cake! Its a good way to store all the extra Zucchini you get and can't eat.
 
Yes, it runs a bit.....but not like a watermelon vine. It grows huge elephant ears in about a 4' diameter bush. As the old leaves die off, the new ones sprout and fan out, so the trunk of the plant will run about 2' or so. Plan for a lot of required space. Around the plant.

Zucchini plants and seeds are both readily available anywhere that sells garden veggie supplies. It's probably a little early to start looking, as this is about the time of year when the farms start stocking plants in stores. Nobody could've anticipated a March dominated by temps in the 80's.
 
Just for fun, let one go about July, after you just couldn't possibly eat any more zucchini. See how big it gets.


I had one a couple years back that produced a fruit, and the trunk of the plant laid on top of it, so I never knew it was there. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why the plant quit producing fruit. When I finally pulled it out in October, there was a zucchini that was laying on the groung about 30" long, and 4" diameter at the base. All that plant's energy became dedicated to that one fruit....it was huge!
 
I found some plants today at Home Depot. Looks like each ont has a couple plants in each peat cup. I don't think I'll try to separate them but just plant in the cup and I would assume thr strongest will survive. Thanks a bunch.
 
I got another Squash question I thought of...Sounds odd..but if I plant my crook neck squash near my zuchinni will they kind of cross pollinate. Like..will I have squash thats part yellow and part zuchinni? Sounds like a crazy question but I've heard of this kind of stuff.
 
I've never heard of it being an issue. I had a buddy that butted his up right next to each other. But what's the worst that can happen? They're not drastically different. Have at it. Hell, TRY for a Franken-squash :D
 
No, the fruit will come true to what the plant it is growing on. However, if you saved the seed from the cross-pollinated squash / zucchini and planted it next year you would end up with something different. The same goes for the fruits of all vegetables - planting different varieties near each other is only a problem if you plan on saving seeds to plant in subsequent years.
 
woodchuckc is correct. Corn is the only crop that i can think of that will show cross pollination in the same year's fruit. As for the squash, if you get a fruit in the same year that looks like a hybrid between yellow and green squash, it's not. It's some kind of pest or disease but I can't remember what it's called, I just remember reading about it once.
