I'll be looking for a youth rifle before long. I'm looking for suggestions on a rifle, as well as, a caliber. I want something that you average just turned eight year old can shoot. I'm not looking for anything fancy. Just a good reliable gun.

Do you reload? My daughters shoot .270s and .30-06s due to me loading them down. If not then 6.5 Creedmoor or 7-08 with 120gr hunting loads oughta do just dandy. Remember that the lighter the rifle, the snappier the recoil, so try something in standard weight if possible. 6.8 SPC AR15 would also be a good choice.

I'm a Savage bolt action rifle fan (not the Axis), but any of them will work, including the budget rifles.

If you decide on a bolt stay with a short action cartridge. Maybe a .243 if you don't reload. If you do, consider a .260, 7mm/08, 6.5 Creedmoor. Load them light to start.
If you want a lever consider a Marlin 336Y. It has a 16.5 inch barrel and a 12.5 inch LOP.

My daughter just took her 2nd deer ever this eve with her Rem Mod 770 in .243. she's been shooting it for 3 or 4 years now and she is 13 now. She took her deer last year with factory corlokt ammo. This season I had loaded 100gr Nosler partitions over 38.0 gr of AA4350 powder. She shoots under MOA at 100 yds with that load.

Remington model 7, in .243 would be my suggestion. Use a premium bullet like a Partition and I'd bet you'll like the results.

Federal offers factory ammo loaded with the Partition.

If you want to go for a lever Marlin has a 336Y youth model. Shorter LOP and a 16.5 inch barrel, 30-30. When he out grows the stock you can slip on a recoil pad to make the stock longer. They cost about $410-425 online.
