Son is 13 and dying to get in the woods with his bow, and shoots well enough. How many FPS should a bow be able to shoot to be effective within 30 yards?
I know it used to be based off #'s but with carbon arrows and etc that doesn't apply as well anymore.

There are ladies and older people that are shooting deer all day long only pulling 40-50lbs. Most of those arrows are traveling anywhere from 200-230fps depending on the bow which equates to 29ft/lbs of k/e when using an arrow that weighs 330 grains. It is about shot placement, not speedespecially when pulling low poundage and lower speeds. Have him use the heaviest arrow he can get with a quality fixed blade and he will not have a problem killing any deer in the planet as long as he is pinpoint accurate.

Chad, when my son was 10 he killed a hog and when he was around your sons age he killed a ram. He was shooting 35-40 lbs I believe.
