Your thoughts on Unit B...

Do you think Unit B will ever get to kill does and not just "special days"???

Nope. Here is why....

1) poor habitat over much of unit b will prevent us from having a large enough herd

2) some areas of unit b still do not have many deer, not much more than a few transients passing through.

3) poaching is rampant in unit b

4) hunting pressure is huge in unit b, especially since we lost all the public hunting land.

I don't think so,I think Unit B will stay on the Non quota hunt system. Some counties can withstand the doe harvest and some can't and it will probably stay that way.Look at Hawkins county,at the deer they harvest (2500 est) then look at Polk County at how many they harvest (200 est),both Unit B counties.

We can kill quite a few now that your allowed 4 with a bow, if you bowhunt of course. And ditto what Diehard Hunter posted about poaching and pressure. I can drive 25 minutes from my house to another Unit B county and be ate up with deer, but right here numbers are crap. Makes it tough to manage.

Good points so far. Also, the average size farm in unit b is way smaller than the rest of the state. In many areas, there could be 5 or 6 different landowners or "farms" on a 300 acre parcel of land. If 3-4 of them let people hunt that makes that 300 acres very overpressured.

Unlikely overall, as much of unit B simply doesnt have enough habitat to support the size herd needed. Simply too much development and too small of tracts of land in many cases here.

Since we're talking about Unit B limits, do you think a 3-buck limit is appropriate for Unit B? I am curious what other Unit B hunters think about it.

Agree with all. I don't think it will change for all of the same reasons above. I have permission to hunt several places in Unit B and with the exception of a couple, I can hunt there all season and only see a few deer. The only bucks we usually take off of these farms are during the rut. On the flip side of the coin, there are one or two farms I can go to and see 8-10 deer every time I'm in the stand. Really depends on what kind of habitat - mostly agriculture, is nearby, I believe.

Absolutely. Habitat is what is limiting in unit b. the deer herd here has been expanding for years, it will just never reach the density of the herds in middle and west Tennessee.

I will add this though. I think having roane county in unit a has been detrimental to the adjacent unit b counties. If you look at how the harvest numbers jumped in roane county after it went to unit a, it would lead one to believe a lot of does from unit b are being checked out as roane county deer. I also think Internet check in has the potential to be just as damaging. I personally think it is just too tempting for someone in say Morgan or anderson or London county to check a doe out as roane county

It will be interesting to see what roane counties harvest numbers look like this fall since they increased the antler less opportunities in unit b. Also, how many people actually kill out in unit b with the old regs. How many will be able to now with the new regs? I see less and less deer every year but the quality in bucks seem to be improving.

I don't see why muzzleloading doe seasons could not be liberalized.
