Is it just me or is this the perfect time of year for getting work done. I've been girdle and squirt, need to cut a dozer road, cut firewood, etc. But it seems like the time for all these is right at the same time as deer season. I want to hunt, but at the same time I want to do these improvements because I know it will help my hunting down the road. What do you guys do?
 
I'm still not great at identifying trees, so I like it when the leaves are still on the trees.

This time I used PastureGuard, but dang it's expensive. I used 25% PastureGuard and 75% diesel fuel. Some of the trees I did last month are already dead.

Any results you can report?

I've used Garlon, Imazapyr and undiluted Glysophate, and to date, have had terrible results killing mature trees with anything. Younger trees no problem, but not mature trees.

I don't bow hunt, so I do all the hack and squirt habitat stuff now (well, actually in August and September).

This is my experience as well. All the trees I'm hitting with Garlon are somewhat smaller trees though; could almost call it pre-commercial thinning where's there are just too many stems/acre. Also trying to improve the species mix by killing lower value trees like gums and releasing the white/red oaks. Since gums are so prone to stump sprout when cut, spraying kills roots and all.
 
Honestly, I've got to find some easy way to kill mature trees. I have hundreds that need killing. So far, the majority of my efforts at killing mature trees have been a failure.

I do a few things on the perimeter but save most of my projects for January through March. That is my favorite time. No ticks or snakes and the leaves are off.
