Well… My daughter took a summer job at Glacier national Park as a barista and she flies out tomorrow. She does online college mostly and all her fall classes are online.

We will probably take her car out in a couple of weeks, or just buy a used one and sell at end of season. If we take her car out, then I plan to fly out and bring her home on the way back in late September around 25th. We will probably take her through Yellowstone, hit a rodeo in Cody, or hit Tetons...some quality dad and daughter time.

Without me diving too deep into researching western hunting at this point… Where could we get deer or antelope tags for gun season around that late September October timeframe Out west to make this trip really interesting on the way back???

Nothing very strenuous, but a memorable time on some public somewhere with a good chance for success. Thought I would just ask here first. I know the deer tag deadline June 1 in Wyoming.

Utah or Colorado would work as well. I don't think Montana opens till Nov. 1

Unfortunately, it isnt that easy any longer.... there is no just buy a tag and hunt public out west last minute for NRs.

I think there are still OTC archery elk tags in Colorado.

You can apply in the WY draw in the next couple days for NR antelope, and have a chance with zero PP in some eastern units (good luck finding access, as most of that land is private).

No idea about MT, as I dont fool with them

There are some units in SD for antelope you could draw a doe tag with 0 PP, not sure when their deadline is.

The days of going out west and hunting on a whim for big game are over.

Maybe check with some landowners for a prairie dog hunt. That would be fun!

After doing quite a bit of research, we might be able to draw a tag.

I just put in for daughter and I both separately for 1st and 2nd choice in the best areas for random draws. I then picked 3rd choice for two different areas side by side that are tight on public ground offerings but one area was 100% draw last year and the other was 100% the year before. I would be happy just to draw one and give it a run.

Cant draw if you don't enter. I really should have been putting in for years to cash out now, but did not. Now, I am just running out of time to hunt and get around.

If you draw a unit with a lot of private, call game and fish for that region. They probably know which landowners will let you hunt for a trespass fee.

I didn't draw, but daughter Izzy drew area 23 for 3rd choice!

So we have a tag now with 15% public but not good numbers according to WY website. It is west of Gillette. Worst case scenario is I am just out the license fee, fly my daughter home ans sell car on marketplace.

I will need to do some research.

Did some more research on Area 23, used Huntstand, and even google dive to see public areas. Looks good to me, so I need to start a walking routine and get ahead on my fall work projects.

I will also call the Gillette Chamber and Game and Fish to check on any lists for owners offering access with trespass fees.

Thought about borrowing my cousins model 7 .260 or get a 6.5, but I am looking to downsize more now. My Browning 30.06 will do just fine. It is time to take off the 2.5x8 scope and add a larger Zeiss to it anyway.

My whitetail ammo will work fine, but my daughter will likely appreciate these lighter recoil cartridges

That's the current plan!

Well…..got the tag in mail yesterday and was on cloud nine! Started reading the tag today and doing some more research and discovered that a type 2 tag is private land access only. Stupid mistake on my part! I spent hours researching and drawing that tag and thought a type 1 was archery and type 2 was rifle.

Oh well…will contact WY game and fish to see if they are aware of any ranchers that still offer reasonable trespass in that area, but from what I can tell that area is full of antelope and basically all leased up by outfitters.

I probably just burned $350 on that tag.
