I moved here last year and found birds like crazy. I can leave my house and see a hundred birds every morning on private. The spot I had planned to hunt is still snowed in and likely won't be open until late may or June. I went to game and fish yesterday and they told me most of the birds are still holed up on private because of the 10 inches of snow that fell last week but did give me a suggestion on a piece of public I may find one on. Who knew turkeys migrated?!
I went this morning and didn't hear a gobble or cut a track until I was 2 miles from the truck but still didn't see a bird. I decided to call my brother back since he had called me yesterday and started really cutting tracks while I was on the phone with him. Found a bunch of hens a few minutes later but the gobblers were on the other side of the river and wouldn't cross. I fooled with them for a while but finally turned back towards the truck. I bumped a gobbler 500 yards in front of me in the middle of the open prairie and he immediately ran to the river and flew across. I really didn't think it was going to work out today and was fine with it but still kept looking as I was walking back. I got on a small knoll and saw a turkey in the grass and also caught movement as mule deer ran towards it. The turkey just laid down and let them run past. I tried cutting distance and saw a red head coming towards me. I sat down and just waited to make sure it had a beard before pulling the trigger. I'm not a huge turkey hunter (I think the is 9 or 10 in my life) but I thoroughly enjoyed being out this morning. I got to watch mule deer, whitetail and pronghorn while also hearing a few gobbles and getting a bird. 8.8 miles round trip and absolutely gorgeous the entire time.

That's awesome! Didn't know there were any states that allowed you to hunt them with what I'm assuming is a center fire. Your pics always make me jealous!
Yeah, it's a 223ai. Wyoming allows for center-fire and I would venture to say the majority of the birds here are killed with center-fire. Most people are not overly fond of turkey here.

Surprisingly Virginia is another center fire turkey state. Never understood that one.
I honestly didn't know that myself. I really don't know if I will do it again but it was legal here so I tried it. I really don't know how many more turkey I will even chase here. There are much cooler animals to hunt.
