I'm looking for a 20 gauge over and under for my 9 year old. He is going to start shooting trap this year. Let me know if you have one for sale, thanks.
 
Unless he has monkey arms or is huge for his age, I'd look for a youth model Yildiz or Savage. Fit is super important to building good form for a young shooter. I'd probably add weight to the stock to soften the recoil. The Yildiz is a sub 6 pound gun.

He'll grow out of it pretty quickly and then you can invest in something better once he has an adult length of pull.

This... gun fit is important... Unless he starts shooting doubles in trap, no need for the o/u yet... a youth sized pump or even single shot would be a good start... or something you can flip after he grows out of it. Hope he love its. Trap and skeet sure are fun.

We checked out the yildiz at academy yesterday. He liked it a lot.

I currently have multiple youth/compact 20 gauge pumps and semi autos. He has been shooting dove since he was 7 years old and ducks at 8. If I can't find the right over and under for him, I'll just let him shoot his duck gun this first year.

My son started shooting on a team when he was 10 with an inexpensive 20 gauge semi auto. Our coach recommended going to a 12 gauge a lot quicker than I anticipated, so we ended up with a Winchester 101 Sporting and installed a Graco adjustable butt plate by the time he was 11. We used shells I reloaded during practice and they were equivalent to 20 gauge loads in 12 gauge hulls. We had a great time while he was shooting trap and skeet! We met some great folks and traveled to regional, state and national competitions every year.
 
Bass Pro runs the Stevens 555 Silver on sale and they seem to be decent shotguns. I had one in 20 gauge for a while and sold it to a friend. They are on the light side, but you might be able to add a little weight somewhere if recoil was an issue for your son.
 
I coached for many years, and I always just recommended getting a 12 ga. to start with, unless they were very small for their age.
You can get reduced recoil shells and play around with barrels lengths, spacers, etc. to get things where they needed to be.
The few kids that showed up with 20 ga. gun always ended up shooting one of the 12 ga. team guns when the parents weren't around. We had a few Weatherby 12 ga. semis that were really nice little guns.
A 12 ga. semi auto would likely have less felt recoil than a 20 ga. over / under.
 
A 28 gauge will get EXPENSIVE to a kid to shoot trap with. My best friend coached high school trap for 6 years. The team would buy 12 gauge shells by the pallet, loaded into his F350 with a fork lift
 
I agree with the comments to go with a 12 guage. My son shot competitively for 9 years. His scores really started jumping when we switched to a 12. Hope you enjoy the journey. I would not take anything for the times we spent as a family on the trap fields.
 
I bought a Yildiz .410 side by side for myself last year. The gun has amazing grain in the stock and shoots incredibly well. It is a great little squirrel and rabbit gun!
