WSM rounds?

what is the purpose for the short mag rounds, i have never shot them nor do i know the ballistics difference, velocity, muzzle energy, etc., i am very curious as to why they have become so popular here lately?

I could be wrong but the way I understand it there are a few things:

1. short action vs. long action
2. fatter cartridge = faster powder burn
3. faster powder burn = flatter shooting

Again I could be wrong but that's my understanding so someone correct me if need be. I had a 300WSM one time and liked it but decided I didn't need it so I sold it.

I've only shot two deer with my .270 WSM but both dropped right where they were standing with Remington Express ammo. I swear it feels like lighter recoil than my .30-06 too, both A-bolts.

Well I will say I am getting to where I want one and I don't know what caliber I want, I won't use it for hunting just target shooting. I need recommendations on a rifle to buy and a caliber and a scope. Please feel free to make all the suggestions you wish.

Shorter, lighter gun with the same ballistics. In fact most achieve around the same ballistics out of a 24" that the belted counterparts get out of a 26". The 300 WSM was introduced in the year 2000, and the 270 and 7mm WSM were introduced in 2001. 12 years later new guns are still being made in them, yet people still think they are going to be obsolete. Seems like a long time to be a flash in the pan. The difference in price for like to like bullets in 300 Win and WSM are usually around 4 bucks. Hardly a huge difference.

As much as I am not a 7 bore fan, a lot of guys are using the 7 WSM in long range matches with good results. Berger 180 gr bullets are pretty popular for long range.

Ruger does not make WSM rifles. However, they do make RCM rifles with a special proprietary powder and reloaders have a difficult time reproducting the factory ammo speeds.

Kimberman pretty much summed it up.

I love the WSM's. Reloading is so much easier too. Less powder and get the same or better performance with less recoil. My favorite is the 7mm WSM.

I don't think they're going to be obsolete. They're just in the running with 25-06, 6mm, 7mm-08, where the ones that shoot them love them, but will learn to reload them if ammo cost is an issue. Most probably will anyway for the performance. As far as cost, I can find Federal Powershok at many walmarts that shoots good for $16 a box and magnums for $20 a box. I can't find WSM ammo anywhere for less than $40 a box. Many places it's closer to $50 or more.

I'm certainly not putting them down or saying they're not sticking around, but I can say they're not for me.

If you are just going to target shoot I would recommend the 7mm, 223 wssm, or 243 wssm. I currently own a 270 wsm and like it, but I have been wanting the 3 cals I mentioned. I aslo think there has been some tinkering with a 6.5 wssm wildcat.

WSSM = Winchester Super Short Magnum

does the shape of the wsm(fatter and shorter) tend to burn powder more efficieantly or quicker than the longer, traditional length brass?

i've got a 243 wssm in a model 70 that is a sweet shooting gun but as in most cases with the wssm it doesn't always feed
if i put more than one in the barrel and 1 in the magazine
but then usually all i need is one good shot :grin:

I believe Olympics Arms has a 300 wssm they sell. supposedly 30-06 numbers from a AR Platform. plus it looks like you can get them in the normal wssm rounds too. I would love to check them out if i only knew who sold them around here.
I have two 270wsm's one in a bar and the other in mod 70.

7WSM IMO is the best cartridge invented in the past 3 decades for an all around target round and round to put meat on the table. Best of both worlds... incredibly accurate for paper punching and long range shooting, yet big enough to take out elk- even if they are a LONG way away.

And a few oz lighter and a couple inches shorter than the standard magnums makes for a great lightweight carry rig, yet still capable for medium to long range applications.

I would base that decision on whether you reload or not. The 270 WSM can be found more often in stores compared to 7mm WSM. Both are excellent. I have had 2 270 WSM's and sold them. Wish I still had the M70 FW, but sold it to a tndeer member for his daughter. Kinda glad to get rid of the T3. I prefer the 300 wsm to both. Its mostly because of the rifles I have them chambered in than the cartridge.

I believe the wsm is for the long action calibers and the wssm is for the short action calibers.
