Would You Trust Your Handloads

In a Critical Defense Situation? I had a gentleman to tell me I needs to carry factory loads in my carry guns. Would just like some opinions to see what everbody else has to say. I trust my hand loads.

i have heard various opinions on this

if you kill some one with a hand load it shows you had intent and malice when making the load ( some bs like that )

hand load could not fire ( a factory one can not fire)

for the record i carry my loads

I wouldn't shoot a hand load at paper or steel if I didn't trust it. That's the whole point of hand loading, right?

didn't know you could buy brass colored primers. All reloads I have seen have silver colored primers. Don't let them find your cases.

I don't carry at this time but, I wouldn't have a problem carrying my handloads.

Winchester primers are brass, there may be others. Primer color will not tell you if you have reload or not.

If I had to use mine in self defense what I had in my gun would be the least of my problems.

I don't but that's only because I carry either a 380 or 40 S&W and I don't want to bother reloading for either. I've never shot a factory load in my 1927 Argentina 45 ACP's and I fully trust my hand loads. Thinking back on failures to fire that I've had, I recall one shotshell that didn't fire and I think it was due to a dove feather getting down in the primer hole of the shell because i always put my empty shells in the game pouch with my dead birds. I had one 30-30 fail to fire in a Model 94 Winchester years ago that I don't know what the cause was. I've recently had a bunch of misfires with my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington but that's a gun problem, not the ammo. If I were going to Africa to hunt cape buffalo, I'd not hesitate to load a box of 460 Weatherby ammo with 500 grain Hornady solids and go after the big beasts.

I've read the deal about how it could go bad for you in court if you use hand loads for self defense but I don't think there are any documented cases of that actually happening. I think that came more from somebody's speculation of what could happen in our modern liberal gun-hating world in a worst case scenario.

Absolutely, that's one of the reasons I load my own, for a little more dependable ignition and performance.

The part about gunshot residue testing was interesting. In every close range shooting, that was a forensic test I always requested our crime lab to conduct.

Amen to that.
My handloads in .308 and .270 are far superior to anything you can buy off the shelf.
Premium powder, bullets, BR2 primers, carefully measured powder, case length, everything.
Not even close. I'd trust my life, or that of my family to my loads.
