Off the top of my head, I think I currently own only two rifles that I've bought new. Everything else was bought second hand. Hard to take what they don't know you have.

Uncle Sam will have severe restrictions in buying ammo or reloading components, which could be non-existent. If you don't have firearms, then you don't need ammo or components. Just because you didn't fill out a 4473 doesn't make them completely invisible. The Internet will be a good resource. I have heard of guys who built a number of custom fishing rods and never paid the required excise tax. Bingo! Caught through the Internet!
Met an English fellow who said a relative had a high end Purdy that was in the ban many years ago. It is stuck in the closet and never sees daylight.
After the school shooting in CT, I recall guys lined up to register their wagon load or arm load of firearms. None was smiling, either.
