I need something to plant in a few woods shady areas. I would like something perennial but open to suggestions.

Wish I knew. I've not had any luck getting an area that looks like that to grow deer food that I planted.

If you will remove all the small trees you possibly can in and around the plot about 15-20 feet into the woods it will drastically improve the amount of light the plot receives. Deer will also feed heavily on the stump sprouts that will shoot up as well.

Clover and whet or rye will be your best bet.

Lime the hell out of it and after the leaves have fallen blow off the plot or they will grearly retard growth or kill it outright if they are even moderately thick.

Try Elbon Rye that stuff grows anywhere. BSK recommended it to me and I've had great success with it. Trim up some limbs, and take out some of the smaller stuff and you'll be good to go.
