When and what are you planting/recommend? I am looking to plant this weekend in a location that did not have a summer plot on it due to my schedule for the remainder of August is packed.
Does anyone see a problem w/ planting them this early?
Also I have some patches in the woods that I am thinking about planting as well.
Do any of you plant in the woods-logging trails or mostly stick to fields?
 
I am planting 2 plots in duranna clover, 1 plot in sugar beets and turnip mix, 3 plots in oats, and several in wheat. I plant anytime from now when there is adequate soil moisture. I have found that i do better to plant in wet ground than trying to time a rain. As far as logging roads they do well until the leaves fall on them and then they smother out.

Yes. We are still in the heart of summer, and we will probably experience considerable hot and dry weather before fall. Winter plots could easily be killed by this weather.

I try to wait until at least late August, and then I wait until we are having consistent rains. September is normally our driest month of the year.
 
I would wait until sept before you plant anything. We may go the whole month of August with no rain. Also towards sept you don't have to compete with the weeds
 
If you are mixing in brassica I would go ahead and put them in this month sometime. Then go back in September and over seed with your cereal grains when you have adequate soil moisture.

I will probably plant some turnips, radishes, and rape pretty soon, we got 1/2 inch yesterday. But it wont be anything more than just a small patch here and there, no big loss if it doesnt rain. For the rest Im going pretty simple -winter wheat,winter rye, crimson clover, annual ryegrass, and some light overseeding of perennial clover plots with ladino, patriot, durana, and cinnamon red plus some chicory.For all of that Im pretty much going to have to wait until the end of the 1st week September just because Ill spend the last 2 weeks of August in Mississipi.
 
Thanks for the input. I think I am going to plant a small patch this weekend 1/4 acre. I need to put out cams anyways. Then plant the majority (remaining 3.5-4 acres the first of Sept.) and compare the two for next year. I planted a small patch 1/4 acre of Evolve Harvest throw and grow last year that came in real well.
Does anyone have a preferential seed combo mix they would recommend or do most of you make your own mixes?

Same here. Durana is the only clover variety I plant anymore, and will put in another 4 acres in a few weeks with winter rye, oats, or wheat (whatever is cheapest at the time). More than anything, I've been really impressed with the drought tolerance and longevity. The initial seed cost is a little higher than others, but it flat LASTS where others burn up or have to be periodically reseeded.

Glad to hear that! With all the rain that we had last month, our clover is looking great, even the ones on ridgetops.

We've also started working towards planting. In process of mowing & spraying right now. Have got a few bottom land plots that we plant early every year to have them ready for bow season. Will plant others as time and weather allows.
 
Tellico, surprisingly our clover looks good also. There must have been more rain in the lease area than in town. Yea we are moving equipment and disking. Weve got the spraying done. Everything bought but fertilizer and dadgum its gotten high.
 
I am thinking of planting some clover myself but wondering if I should do so this fall or wait until Feb. Has anyone had any trouble with the clover freezing out when planted in fall. I have heard the root system does not have time to develop well enough to withstand freezes. Also, I plant oats or wheat toward end of Sept if it gets too high too soon frost can also kill it.

Never had any of those problems.
 
If you are in southern TN it may not get cold snaps as early as we do....however I know frost can kill wheat if it gets too big to soon. Most farmers around here dont plant wheat until Oct for this reason.
