Sauger below cordell hull is great if the water is running good(i.e. one generator most of the day) but don't know of any cabins close by except the roach motel in downtown Carthage. If you don't mind driving a little farther Cedar Hill Resort on Dale Hollow is great. Cheap winter rates and no tourists, just us hardcore fisherman. AND the bonus is the potential to catch a giant smallmouth on a little tiny fly since new years is right in the float-n-fly season.
I'm watching water temps for when the water gets cold enough for Skipjack. Love the flyrod action.
Or hit the dam tailaters for sauger anytime between Thanksgiving and late March.

Be a man and do some hardcore winter time catfishing find u a deep hole and just be patient it will pay off

Fishboy, I don't know much about winter fishing in TN. But the White River, the Red River, and Spring River in Arkansas might not be too bad, if you don't mind traveling.
Then again, you never know what the weather will be like on New Year's Day. It might be in the 60s during the day.

Change of plans. We have been going non stop for 14 months. Wife said "lets spend the week at home and just do a couple day trips if we feel like it."
That means we will probably fish Old Hickory and Maybe the Caneyfork or the cordell hull dam area around Carthage.
Hope to find some walleye, sauger, or stripers.

Sounds good, nothing wrong with staying home. There's plenty of good waters in your area, you can hit a different one every day.

Cordell Hull: As folks said above, Cordell Hull tailrace will be an excellent bet for sauger. Jigs tipped with minnows or spoons will produce. They seem to stack up close to the dam in pockets outside the heavy current.
Old Hickory: As soon as it turns cold, the big stripers move into the area around the Gallatin Steam Plant. Catch them on live skipjack, or swimbaits at night if you can stand the cold. White bass, sauger, and catfish can be caught on the bottom with big tuffie minnows.
Caney Fork - the trout have been slow lately, probably because they recently shut off generation that had been running heavy around the clock. If it gets cold enough for a shad kill, it should bring up some good fish though.
Dale Hollow: Fish the lower end of the lake with float & fly or live shiners for big smallmouth. Every once in a while someone catches a giant trout this way - I wish I knew how to find those big Dale Hollow trout consistently but I don't.

I used to fish Onieda alot. I miss ice fishing. best eating there is. I now fish for Sauger. Just about the same. ChubWoodchuck said:flintlock said:

I gave up fishing in the winter here, takes to long to chop a hole to put the boat in......................

We ice fish up here in NY. Drilled through 28" of ice last yr. to catch some nice walleye's & a great Brown trout.
