how do you play the wind in steep terrain? My access for the most part is from the top 1800' and the deer bed from 1-500'

First of all welcome to the site!

In my experience you hunt knowing that you're going to get busted probably so much that you're wondering how you'll ever kill a deer. But it happens. I still kill some deer. They might bust me most times but they don't bust me every time.

The only way I have found to beat the wind in those situations is to go above and beyond to get to your spot with the wind in your favor, which typically means walking, walking, and more walking to access the spot. If the deer have set themselves up to defeat the lazy hunter that wants to kill them easily then you really have no other choice.

Thermals and prevailing wind direction will get you so far, beyond that in these hills and hollows the wind will blow from every direction in most 4-6 hour periods of the day, unfortunately.

Agreed. I just ty to play the prevailing wind and the thermals to the best of my ability. However, on days with light winds, over the course of the sit eventually the wind gets around to blowing in every direction.
