Wind Switch and Movement

Hey guys. New to the forum. I caught myself coming to this forum keeping up with the wise words of BSK, so figured I might as well join. I live in northeast Alabama about 2 miles from the TN state line.

Anyways, for you hill country guys who deal with thermals and such, have you noticed changes in deer movement based on wind direction? On our property, there are two mountains that run east to west with a large saddle between the two. There is a mineral site in that saddle. I've noticed when checking trail cams this summer that whenever there are :tu: days the wind switches from either north to south or vice versa that there is a ton more deer activity at this mineral site. My thinking is that as the wind switches, they cross that saddle to the opposite mountain that favors that wind direction and the thermals. Whenever it switches again, they pass back through going the opposite direction. What say you?

This makes sense....and is what is expected....if I see a wind predicted to switch midday I'm gonna make sure I'm there for the switch....bucks don't move far but they will enough to get the wind back in their nose.....

In the mountains the wind can switch 4 different directions in a half day while hanging. Best thing to do is try and have the right setup for the wind when you go in and hope that it stays constant during the early hours of hunting.

I don't know that enough hunters are prepared for changes in wind direction but it's always great to have multiple stand sites prepared for just such occasions. I'm not afraid to climb down mid hunt and re-climb another tree nearby more advantageous.

That's why up here instead of havin a stand for one wind I like to keep it where its favorable for multiple winds cause if it blows one direction all day then its a miracle. Its amazing what you can see it do just by droppin a leaf, you'd think ever deer within 50 miles would smell you

If you had to change stands every time the wind switched up here, you'd wear out your tree stands.

There are homes all around where I hunt within 300 to 400 yards, people moving; I have noticed that deer aren't as alert to human scent in that area. If I were to get down to move to a different stand I would be spreading more scent. Just use as much scent control as I possibly can and the least movement possible.
