Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips ?

We have used these shells in the .308 with pretty good results the last few years.

Found a box of them in 180 grain for the .300 win mag.

I wasn't sure if this was a good bullet choice for the .300 so I didn't buy them.

I used them once in a 7mm STW and it was too fast for them and didn't get good results.

What ya'll think about them for the .300 ?


I did manage to get a box of core lokt 150 grain and two boxes of .17 hmr to squirrel hunt with.

I used the 180 Nosler BT in a 300 RUM at 3375 FPS and it worked well,,it should be awesome in the Win Mag.

Had a buddy with a 7MM WSM. He is a great shot, and I'm not sure that I had ever heard of him letting a deer get away. When he first got the rifle, he had the choice of Ballistic Silver Tips or power points in factory ammo. He went with the BST and let three or four deer get away in a single season. He was ready to get rid of the gun until he found some Fail Safe ammo. He started dropping them in their tracks.

I would say the .300 would still not be as fast as the 7MM WSM, but I will not purchase BST in any caliber after his experience.

If I'm not mistaken the problem with ballistic tips is velocity. The faster it goes the more it fragments and doesn't penetrate. Generally the 308 isn't over the point where it explodes and that's probably why you've had great success with it. In a 300 win mag I'd opt to something that holds together better. I'm sure they're accurate. But I have several nosler ballistic tips that I only plan to punch paper with.

You might try the Federal Fusion if you can find them.

Only deer I have ever lost with my 300wm was with those bullets... Never used them again in that gun. Have had excellent results in my 308 with them....

I used them in a 270 wsm with bad results. The bullet just blew right through. To fast for the yardage I was using them not allowing the bullet to expand.

Thanks guys that is about what I was thinking, just wanted to get some more input.

I personally have never had any desire to shoot anything except the 150 grain core lokts.

Probably just stick to that.
Dunno if MAN will believe it or not... until he loses a deer.

I've shot a deer with that bullet out of my win mag at 30 yards. Didn't go far.

Luckily I didn't hit bone. I've seen nasty results from hitting the shoulder.

Thats all I shoot from my .300 WSM and I have only had 1 deer ever not drop on the spot and that was just because of some wind drift at 500 yards! 14/15 have dropped in there tracks with 1 shot.

As stated above, if you hit the shoulder it just about explodes both shoulders! I have also made a few Pink mist head shots!

I like the 150gr my self, but thats because Im usually shooting over 200 yards.

If you shot a coyote at roughly under 200 yards with that round you wouldn't have to skin him. The plastic tip pushes into the copper jacket and causes it to expand. The faster that process occurs the more damage is done. I am sure you have found long ribbed strips of copper in animals you have killed. That is the telltale sign of too much speed and/or the bullet hit bone. A quartering towards shot with a BT is never recommended.

I load ballistic tips for getting a new rifle or scope zero'd in and then I switch over to partitions or (now) Accubonds.

Nasty results out of my 7 mag with those bullets. I have yet to lose a deer that I have shot with that round.
