Why I need a better air rifle

Because I just shot another squirrel in the 20 yard range and he dodged the BB. The squirrels in my backyard are educated and I can't even open the window without them running to the next yard. And whenever I take a longer shot, they dodge the bullet.

My gun is good and has killed a lot of squirrels. But eventually I'm gonna save up for one that shoots faster than sound... Probably a break barrel that does 1200 fps.

Anyone else shoot subsonic pellets/BBs/bullets have squirrels dodge the shot at longer ranges? My gun shoots something in the 800s if I remember correctly and I can see the BB through the scope most times. The squirrels in my yard react like lightning.
 
Don't forget the noise factor of the higher power rifles, not much difference in noise from them and a .22, as long as no neighbors calls the law you'll be good.

Yeah I saw one in the store the other day that had a built in suppressor, that might be worth buying.

:D they got good ears, the darn windows like to screech when I open them, sends the squirrels flying faster than the BB out of my gun.
 
My nephew has 2 and they are no good.....1200+ fps with built in supressor....called the dust nitro venom something it sucks....i wouldnt own an air rifle

ha.. you must not have ever shot a sho nuff air rifle.. invest in one of these puppies and youll have more fun than the law allows... I have seen guys shoot 100 yards with these... my truck wouldnt haul the pigeons I have killed in the past few years with mine.. I killed 100 one night at a local scrap dealers factory.. shoot some crow magnum pellets and you can turn one inside out.. I installed a silenced on mine and its silent but violent!!

now that is what I need! although I might get the cops called on me carrying that around a residential area :D
 
Tip. They do not sell quality airguns at your local bass pro or Walmart . Save up about 300 to 400 bucks and shoot me a message and I will help you out. Press fit has the right idea, but there are cheaper PCP's for beginners. You can come and shoot my marauder one day if you want.

Another thing, they actually make the airgun that pressfit reccomended in the Color: Blue and Red, specifically so that it will not cause a stir in a suburban setting.

Gamo makes a single-shot pellet rifle called the "Silent Cat" that has a suppressor chamber on the end.

Woot.com sells them refurbished periodically, and you can buy them for around 80-120 bucks. Go to their site and click on the "Sport" link for the sporting goods stuff they are selling at the moment. The items change frequently (daily sometimes), so I just check it once per day for something I'm looking for. It's a fun site.

I have no idea of quality relative to the others mentioned, but it's cheap enough to give a shot if you are in a position to try one out in the near future.

only problem with subsonic is the squirrels dodge the bullet at longer ranges. It can be tough to get one in range, but I do manage to kill one every now and then with my pellet gun. Just got one a few days ago.
 
My buddy and I tried squirrel hunting around december and we were using air rifles meant for small game and we shot one squirrel about 6 times and it just kept truckin. Only using a .22 from now on or a shotgun lol

was it a fox squirrel? or was the air rifle one of the lower FPS cheaper types. Head and neck shots are lethal from my gun to about 15 yards, and I had a perfect lung shot too where the squirrel ran up a tree only to fall dead 5 seconds later.

What brand,caliber and model is the "Air rifle meant for small game" That may help us determine what the problem was. Only takes about 11-12 ft lbs to kill a squirrel.
 
I would watch out for the Gamo suppressed ones. I picked one up from academy one time to take care of some suburban squirrels and it ended up being as loud as a .22.. they called it "the quiet gun" LOL yeah right! I took it back a week later

My little nephew has like an 80$ crossman he got from walmart. It is actually decently quiet because I think it only shoots about 800fps. It also has a nice weaver mount that seemed a lot better than the Gamo I had.

A guy I work with told me whne he practiced regular with his blow gun he could spear a fly on the wall, hes not one to be a liar so I'll take his word for it, but would like to se it done tho.

It wasn't a fox squirrel...just a regular ole gray. The air rifle is a Crosman and I think it's 1200 fps? I may be wrong on that though but the last shot knocked him out of the tree but he just took off again!

blowgun shooting is instinctive, and you can get pretty good at it. But the range is limited to about 10 yards or so before you lose accuracy.
 
I bought my son the gamo 1450fps last christmas. It is pretty loud but it definatly does the job. It shot so good i went and got one for my self and this year my son has killed about a dozen squirels and only brags on his head shot kills now lol
 
I have a 1000 FPS Gamo .177. It kills the snot out of starlings, grackles, cowbirds, and squirrels. It is loud however, and if I didn't have cool neighbors, I would bet the thing would have gotten the law called on me. If I had it to do over, I would get a 22 cal pellet rifle that does around 800 FPS. My Dad has one, and it is a lot quieter, but kills as good if not better.

You're right. The reason why folks have problems with the noise is that the pellet is breaking the sound barrier. The "Silent Cat" (or any other suppressed) air guns will only silence so much while using super-sonic ammo. Read up on the pellet weight options versus velocity when buying them.

Maximum power isn't always what you want in a suburban setting :)
