Who did it?

Who knows if the birds were legally killed and checked in or not. But dumping them in a creek is a huge problem. It gives all of us a bad name and huge negative image to non hunters. Same thing with dumping deer carcasses on the side of the road or in a creek. If they are caught, hopefully they can be prosecuted for pollution of waterways.

Be respectful of others after you process your game. Dispose of the waste in an area that is not conspicuous to others, preferably where buzzards can clean up the leftovers quickly.

Oh, for any of you that don't save the legs and thighs... you are really missing out. Some of the richest and best tasting parts of the bird. We turned 2 sets of legs and thighs into fajita meat in the crockpot earlier this week. Amazing stuff.
pm recipe please, never used this part of the bird, i'd love to try it

Do you have a recipe?

Easy peasy. I put 4 thighs, 4 drumsticks in a crockpot just covered with chicken broth and 1 pack of fajita mix. Cooked overnight (prob 8 to 10h), shred meat off the bone, leave remaining stock in crockpot and mix in another half pack of fajita mix. Slow cook another 3 to 4h, then Sautee onions, peppers, (and we found some Morel mushrooms to add) with the other half pack fajita mix to top the shredded turkey with.

The next day, we made breakfast fajitas with scrambled eggs and cheese with the shredded turkey. Still had a couple small ziplock bags left to freeze to thaw out and eat in a couple weeks.

These kind of people are not hunters. They are slobs and have no respect for our wildlife. I hope they find them, but their punishment will not be enough.....
This is part of the turkey decline problem as well. Maybe not a big portion, but part of the equation

I just keep it basic with seasoning in the crockpot. But next go around think I'm going to try using the broth

That sounds delicious

So the meat shreds apart pretty easy from the bones and tendons and all that mess? I tried smoking 4 legs/thighs last year real low and slow and it was a real pain to get the meat off. I've still got it in the freezer but I am definitely interested in something more efficient. The stock from those smoked legs on the other hand was incredible.

yes, after 8-10h in the crockpot, the meat just falls off the bone. you can almost shake a drumstick, all the meat falls off, and you're left holding the leg bone and most of the spindles.

I used to smoke them or roast them.... never could get them to come out edible. Then I threw them away for 10-12 years and felt guilty. But the past 4 or 5 years, I have eaten all of them. Almost prefer them in the crockpot over the breasts.

My next batch, I'm going to crockpot the dark meat with a jar of peppericino peppers (juice and all), onions, and a little beef broth.

Awesome. Can't wait to try it. Hopefully have a fresh one for a test run tomorrow!

I feel the same way about letting them go to waste. Just never heard or learned of a good way to cook them due to the tendons and bones. Will definitely save them on the next bird and try the fajita recipe out.

I'll add another recipe idea to this thread. Last year I killed two birds. I always loved chicken hearts, so I thought I would try turkey hearts. First, they are HUGE! Secondly they are absolutely delicious. I diced them up and sautéed them with a little butter, olive oil and garlic salt. The texture and flavor reminded me of sautéed mushrooms. Honestly....the best part of the bird. Agree on the legs and thighs also. I make taco meat. The thighs have a lot more meat than the drums and not much sinew like the drums have.
