Have an area that I have been biding my time to go hunting in all season. About to have a few days off for the holidays followed by another week off in 2 weeks. Been watching the radar all day as the front approaches and was hoping to sneak into my spot with climber and bow before the rain reached me then leave my stand for following hunts. Well i get to my club about 3:20 and it's already raining but I am going to tough it out. Find a tree and finish climbing when I hear a disturbance behind me (keep in mind I havn't turned around, attached harness to tree, or raised my bow from the ground.). Do my best to turn and look but see nothing. As all of this is going on a realize that a lot of young trees and bushes are going to make this a bad bow hunting spot. The rain is starting to pick back up so I convince myself the noise that I heard was wind/rain approaching down the hollow and my remaining time would be best served by cutting a few lanes in hopes that the rain would serve to limit my scent. I make about 3 descents with my stand when I look to my right and at 30 yards a bruiser is walking beside me. Solid 8 with pretty good width outside of his ears and appeared to be pretty heavy on the hoof. He never got faster than a steady walk and had his nose to the ground (Wayne co. rut report). Once he was out of the area I used my remaining time to cut a few lanes. I hate that I botched the hunt so to speak but am happy I was able to get things set up to improve my chances going forward. Sorry so long.

Sounds like you might have attracted him with your climbing the tree. I have done that a time or two. I assume the noise might sound like a buck rubbing a tree hard or maybe like sparing with another buck.

Hard a young buck come charging in on me once while I was taking my tree stand off the tree. That was an attention getter.

The part about having his nose to the ground sounds like maybe a doe had passed through earlier of he was just scent checking the ground for one. Either way it doesn't sound like he even knew you were in the area.
