Those of you who hunt climbers, do you try to face any particular direction? There are many factors like the wind, sun or even the clearest lane or a deer trail . Just wondering what you think about as you are climbing the tree.

The number one factor for me is the wind. I want the wind in my face. Second factor is the sun. Nothing worse than the sun coming up right in front of you when a good buck come through and you are fighting to see because of the sun. As far as shooting lanes and trails, practice positional shooting so that you can have almost a 360 degree field of fire and then those 2 don't matter too much.

First concern is wind. Second concern is sun. Then I try to find a broadside spot that I can see the area I think the deer may pass through. I'm a right handed shooter so I try to place my stand to take advantage of that with my most potential area to my left or straight out in front of me. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one component for another, especially while trying to find a climbable tree for a climber. With a hang on your choices open up somewhat. I always sit with my back to the tree but generally position my climber to where I can stand and cover potential areas behind and to the sides of me.

Where I hunt, a good tree to climb exactly where you want to hunt can be hard to find. I usually pick out a tree near a trail that I want to hunt and wait on favorable wind to enter the area and hunt it. I try to account for the sun when I can but I don't worry about it if I can't make it work.

If I can I try to make the deer have to face into the sun rather than me. On 2 occasions I can remember even doing that almost cost me the shot. With the sun rising behind me the bucks showed up out in front of me just about the same time the sun was rising over my shoulder and the glare of it was on the back of my scope. I had to take the shot holding the rifle with one hand while placing the other over the back of the scope to block out the sun. Good way to get a bloody nose.

It's totally dependent on the setup. The only thing that is a constant in how I set my climber up is not having the sun in my eyes. Every other variable including wind for me is determined by my position in relation to where I think the deer will travel

I like my primary shooting lanes/pockets to be in front and to the left. Wind and sun may vary but I try to have it setup where I don't have to move much when a deer comes into ranfe

Exactly ! Sometimes there are just so many variables , actually the wind/sun mostly but at times I tend to get greedy trying to cover as much as possible . One place on my previous lease I had a permanent stand in a saddle but sometimes the deer would skirt the stand so out came my climber . But wind direction dictated where I set my climber because the tree selection was limited . I had one tree on the west side and one tree on the east side I could climb and if the wind was directly out of the south then forget it . Alot at times to consider .

Face into wind always if using archery equipment. Still like to
Face into the wind with rifle but if I can see along ways I will sit with wind at my back. I like to be 25-30yds off the trail I expect the deer to use. However 75% of the time deer do not come from the direction I expect them too...Lots of variables and things to consider when picking a set. When hunting public land I don't always get to have all the variables to my advantage.

Like you Roost, I used to like to face the wind but seemed the deer would come in from behind me and spook. Then it dawned on me. Why would deer travel with a tail wind? If I face downwind or face with the a half wind, I'm more likely to see deer traveling with a quartering wind. If they do come in from behind, I'm still ok since they can't smell me. They may get under me before I notice but that's ok too. I may want to enter my area into the wind but I still expect the deer to move into the wind somewhat.

Shot my first deer left handed with a 12g single shot, the tree I climbed with out a stand over looked a soy bean field, expected to see deer there not behind me,fast forward 20 something years shot 1 at chuck swan left handed,no telling where you will get a shot

I try to set up facing the tree with the tree between me and the anticipated travel route.

You must hunt out of a cottonwood stand. I don't know too many that you can do that. But, that wouldn't work with a crossbow for me but I do like the added cover the Tree provides.

I haven't kept up with different deer stands so I don't know how each is capable of being hunted but I do know that you can get a seat allowing you to hunt facing the tree with an Oleman. I haven't done it but any type stand that has a web type seat could be customized by adding a second web seat. Sit in between them and you can face the tree or turn around and face out.

This, especially in the woods. Two of my biggest 3 deer ever killed came right in on top of me giving me almost no time to "get into position". I set myself as far off the trail as I could and still have a clear shot, which happened to be about 20 yds. One shot was about 8 yards. If I had set up facing the wind or back to the sun I would have never gotten the shot.

Ideally I like to have the wind directly in my face. Also straight to left side as it's more of a natural motion since I am right handed.
